Description
The name Ayako means "Colorful Child". Perhaps this explains why Ayako was first attracted to Shouichi Murasaki...with his flower-like purple hair. Ayako always did love flowers...Her two daughter's names are tributes to her:
Ayako - AYA KO - 彩子 - "COLORFUL CHILD"
Yuko - yuu KO - 優子 - "Gentle CHILD"
Ayane - AYA ne - 彩音 - "COLORFUL Sound"
When Ayako passed away, she left her "子" hair bead to her first daughter Yuko (who also has that character in her name). But, Ayane, who looked up to her mother and big sister wanted a bead, too! So, Yuko tricked the gullible Ayane into thinking a weighted ball was a hair bead...in an attempt to secretly make Ayane a strong warrior against her will...
Obviously, Yuko takes after Ayako in terms of her slender, graceful body type...but, in terms of personality and interests, Yuko takes after her warrior father, Shou. Meanwhile, Ayane takes after her father's sturdy, rugged body type...but, her interests steer more toward dainty, peaceful, "girly" endeavors that Ayako once enjoyed.
Ayako may be gone, but her graceful influence continues to be felt by her two vastly different daughters. Even Yuko, a tom boy at heart, has a deeply ingrained respect for "ladylike" elegance and class.

Well, when written in Japanese, "Shiun 紫雲" and "Murasaki 紫" are only different by one character. A long time ago, the family was known as "紫雲" (Shiun). But, over time, it was eventually shortened to just "紫" (Murasaki).
So, in current times their legal name is Murasaki (Ayane Murasaki, Yuko Murasaki, etc).
However, after the Morrigan attack, the family was presumed dead. So, while in hiding, Ayane and Yuko changed their name Shiun to protect themselves...and also to pay homage to their family's history.
