Yes, that's true about the software, but good tools are really important here. And too bad that manufacturers don't include raw into more affordable model features, but mostly in high end poinandshoots, which start to approach DSLR price already. But IMO raw process is a must have for any shots made in difficult light, where cameras algorithms often get confused. Auto mode jpgs are nice, but only in simple light, for casual shots.
Luckily there are some workarounds, at least for most recent small Canon cams, there is an community made addon available called CHDK, which allows many useful extra features and also raw, which is yummy.
