Description On September 28, 1066, the Normans landed at Pevensey on the British coast. This poor English man-at-arms has just been notified that he'll soon be marching south with Saxon King Harald. Of course, this all came to a head at Hastings on 14, October when the Normans defeated the Saxons 1-nil. The English still dispute the validity of that score, as they attribute it not so much to William of Normandy's generalship as to shoddy officiating by the Belgian and Irish Referees. I mean, bloody 'ell... some archer should have been given a red card for shooting poor old Harald in the eye!!

This photo was inspired by an obscure figure on the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which shows an Englishman texting. Of course, to enforce their bloody subjugation of the Saxon lands, the Normans soon made texting whilst riding a horse, astride an ass or atop a carriage a hanging offense. This traditionally English art of communication was lost until modern times when cell phones and personal electronic devices were re-invented by Martin Cooper, an American descended from a family of Saxon barrel and cell-phone makers.
