Hiyo, my latest piece. This is the lovely Pei Pei-chan. She sent me this photograph to draw of her, she's so nice ^__^. I hope she likes it. I know I shouldn't be uploading this yet, because I haven't heard from her yet to see if it's ok, but I haven't heard a word from her for almost a month. To be honest, I'm really worried if she's ok. When you come back Pei Pei, if you want me to remove this, I will do so. But I just want to hear some criticism on my skills to see where needs improvement. So this might not be up for long if Pei Pei choose that she doesn't want me to have this up. Anyways, this was done like usual with a set of 6B to 4H pencils. HOpe you can all give me some constructive criticism on where I can improve, thanks.Related content

Great job on the expression, form, proportions, and positioning. Everything seems to fit in just fine, it's impressive. The shading could be clearer and some areas would be better darker and more defined, like where her jaw meets her neck and the lines of her lips.

Wow fantastic again!!!! BUt one thing I would do is to maybe make the shadows on her face just a bit darker because the hair is so dark and it seems a bit too much for her pale face.

I dont think theres anything wrong w/ the outlines it has this raw effect w/c is good for me thats just me though.

hahaha well if you want me to draw her, send me some pictures of her, cuz that one she has on her ID is not taht great, not taht she's not pretty or anything, I just prefer headshots like the portraits I've done. ^__^ If you can get me headshots, I'll see what I cna do ok ^__^

Hahaha glad you noticed the eyes too, I can't figure out myself what's wrong with it either, lets put our heads together at AN and try to see how we can improve this picture. Yea and the hair, hair is the bane of my existance, can't draw them to save my life, teach me how to draw hair plz

i'm not sure how the original picture looked like.. but i think you managed to capture Pei Pei's likeness into it
as for critiques.. i think one of them would be not to do outlining.. usually when it comes to doing realism.. there really isn't any "lines" but more of just light and dark shades.. but when you do start it's easier to work with an outline.. but try to eliminate it while working on it, so by the time you get to the final piece, it looks as if there were hardly any outlining.. however for the right side of her face which is all pretty much light saturated.. a very thing outline should do.. but make the outline line very smooth and precise.. it looks kinda unconstant in this picture...
another critique is the eyes... i think that there is something off about them.. i'm not exactly sure what.. but they are possibly a bit crooked or it has to do with the nose.. the shading is a bit too light for me to be able to really see the defining features of the face.. so that might want to be something to work on.. though i could be wrong.. maybe the scanner couldn't pick up those details?
one more critique would be there hair.. i like how you did the hair on top of her forehead.. it has very precise smooth lines.. however, when you get to the other parts of her hair.. it's alot more scraggly and the hair seems to have some split ends.. i'm not sure if the original picture was like that.. but you could try drawing with bigger arcs for the hair.. this way to avoid your lines being too short and then making the hair look scragly... also i'm not sure if there's supposed to be a shine on the hair.. so if there originally was.. then do the strands of hair in the dark areas first.. and the loose parts at the end of your stroke will lead into the highlighted part..
also for the loose flyaway hairs on the top of her head.. make them a bit lighter when you draw.. that way they don't seem so immediate and give a messy look.. that way it gives her a more delicate refined look in the end..

have you tried using grids for doing realism? i find it really helps alot
