Description Amethyst crystals with some interesting tiny inclusions, which are probably Goethite.

Because someone asked how I did this shot: The setting is in my living-room. I use a conventional but very strong hand spotlight (which would normally be used on a building site or something) for illumination. My camera is a Nikon D5000 which is one of the cheaper and older (but very good!) DSLR on the market. For this picture I mounted the camera on a tripod and used the Micro-Nikkor 105mm macro objective (which I'm also very happy with). The photo was then processed (cropped for a better composition; also some alterations to the contrast and color temperature and some minor retouching of inconvenient dust flakes lying on the crystal) with Adobe Photoshop CS5 software.

This is so pretty! I love close up photos of crystals and this one looks like a beautiful alien landscape. Also, those construction site spotlights are EPIC! They often create a really interesting colour caste which is fun to play with

This image is really awesome! I'm very much impressed by your description of the lighting technique as well as the result! I can't help but notice that it reminds me of the SF-movie "Andromeda" - if it was green!

How do you get a shot like that!???
Is it with setting, camera, or skill?

Um, I'm glad you like the picture. The setting is in my living-room.

OK lighting I can do Photoshop I can get. I need a better camera and a tripod would be good investment. Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EllerPhotos In reply to KingSexyStudKitty [2015-01-07 22:02:11 +0000 UTC]

If you buy a tripod, make sure you get a really heavy and robust one! The light ones sold "for traveling" are totally useless; they will always wobble and the pictures will blur more than if you do the shot by hand. If a good tripod seems too expensive at the moment (they can cost more than a new camera!), try using a cushion filled with rice - if you place the camera on that, the rice grains will lock with each other and will also keep the camera very still. It's not an optimal solution, but works still better than a cheap tripod imo. About the camera - I don't know, what kind of camera do you use at the moment? If it's a compact camera, I'd advise you to invest in a DSLR and some good objectives. However, if you already have a DSLR - ANY DSLR - you probably don't need a new one. I have one that was one of the cheapest on the market 5 years ago, and it works perfectly fine.
