Hi! I'm from and I noticed your piece in the gallery. It is beautiful! I like that she is a bigger lady: your handling of the pose and the anatomy is very convincing. The face is beautifully rendered.
Like one of your other commenters, I thought that she was a mermaid, too (I really said: "Wait, what?" and then "Ohhhhhhh".)
There are three reasons for this: first, the figure is so well done and so striking that the tail is almost peripheral. This is in its way GOOD. Second, the pattern of the flower petals suggests bubbles, and third, there's not enough shading or modeling on the tail--in fact, there's not enough tail (wow does that sound wrong). When I say "not enough shading or modeling" I mean that, compared to the beautiful human portion, the pose, markings, and shading of the tail--particularly where woman and snake intersect--doesn't seem nearly as well thought out. The transition needs to be more shapely...right now there is a stark division. There isn't really any indication of three-dimensionality in the tail--at least not as much as you would want to demonstrate in this style. The lady portion is leaning forward slightly, but the tail intersection is straight. Fourth (wait, what?! FOURTH!?" I her you cry) the tip of the tail looks like a tentacle because it does not taper and lacks direction and purpose. If you look at snake tails they are rarely held in the air languidly like this one.
I like the inclusion of the navel--you are right, it just would be a big empty space without it--but it needs to go further towards center. Probably about a navel-length.
