Description
A selection of cruiser-class ships in use during the Demosian War:
Mars-class: the standard cruiser of the Federal Navy. It is heavily armored and armed with 4 medium and 10 small ballistic turrets, though its acceleration is somewhat below average. It is considered a solid workhorse design, if not particularly remarkable.
Federal Patrol cruiser: specifically designed by the Corey-Corbett Aerospace corporation for the use of the Federal Patrol, the patrol cruiser is a dedicated scouting and exploration ship that features state of the art sensor systems, high rate of acceleration, an oversized FTL drive, and unusually for a ship of its size atmospheric flight capability. For self-defense and anti-pirate missions the patrol cruiser carries 4 small laser turrets, which retract inside the hull when not in use. Which woefully under-gunned compared to proper military cruisers, this armament is enough to offer protection from most pirate ships (which tend to be modified civilian ships, or at best decommissioned destroyers), and patrol cruiser's high rate of acceleration allows it to escape most vessels that outgun it. Though not intended to be used as proper warships, during the Demosian War these ships were used to great effect as scouts and to deliver commando teams and supplies to Hierarchy-occupied planets.
Praetor-class: the standard cruiser of the Hierarchy Navy. Following the Demosian naval doctrine, the class is heavily armed with 6 medium and 12 small ballistic turrets, as well as a prow-mounted torpedo launcher. However, in order to carry heavy armament while maintaining a good rate of acceleration, armor protection had to be sacrificed. The Praetor-class compares well with the Federation's Mars-class, being of similar mass and more heavily armed, as well having somewhat higher rate of acceleration, but having less armor protection.
Dragonfly-class escort carrier: the Hive Collective Fleet doesn't use cruisers and battleships as their capital ships, but instead makes extensive use of drone-carriers. The Dragonfly-class is designed to act as escorts of the larger Hive-class fleet carriers or as leaders of subcapital squadrons. The Dragonfly-class relies mostly on its drones to provide offensive power, as the armament of 2 medium and 4 small ballistic turrets is very light for a vessel of its size.
Hornet-class: the Hive Collective Fleet's naval doctrine is built around swarm-tactics, using carrier-launched drones and large numbers of subcapital ships to overwhelm enemy capital ships. The Hornet-class light cruiser is intended to conform to that role while also providing the Collective Fleet with heavy direct firepower. Though light-weight and fragile, these ships should not be underestimated, as it carriers a keel-mounted heavy mass-driver, a weapon normally found in primary turrets of battleships. This gives a squadron of Hornets a firepower compatible to a battleship. 10 light ballistic turrets offer the class protection from enemy destroyers that are able to out-speed it, though light armor still makes it vulnerable to returning fire unless properly supported.
Nereid-class: the line-cruiser of the Seiran Star-Republic, the Nereid-class boasts a high rate of acceleration and carriers 4 large and 12 medium laser turrets. While their effective range is low, this armament allows to class to deal heavy damage to anything in range. The Nereid-class is considered one of the best cruisers currently in service, though like other Seiran warships it does suffer from high amounts of heat generated by its powerful engines and all-energy armament, and while the distinctive “hammerhead” prow is reasonably well-armored, the armor protection of the rest of the ship is below average. The ship is designed to accelerate towards the enemy prow-first while firing the heavy lasers, then fire a broadside with all its weapons as it passes the enemy before retreating to cool off and ready for another attack run.
