Description The standard cruiser of the Federal Navy, the Mars-class is based on the Colony War-era Terran-class cruiser used by the Corporate Navy during that conflict. It shares its hull design and most components with the older class but some of the light ballistic turrets of the Terran-class were removed in order to mount larger weapons that allow the Mars-class to more effectively fight other capital ships. Most Mars-class hulls are build in the Terracorp Lunar Shipyards in the Sol system, though the design is also produced under license in other major shipyards affiliated with the Federal Navy. Members of the federalist block on the Federal Senate, who frequently clash the terra-centrist block led by Earth, have for years advocated for the Mars-class to be replaced by a new cruiser design built by one of the Federation's other major shipyards, citing the threat of the Corporate Dominion being able to use its status as the largest producer of warships in the Federation as a form of political leverage. However, while the Federal Navy had commissioned a handful of new cruisers designated the Nova Terra-class from Corey-Corbett Aerospace Corporation before the outbreak of the Demosian War the widespread adoption of the new class is likely to be delayed due to the need to quickly replenish the number of ships lost in the war, which is easier accomplished with the cheaper and already proven Mars-class. For now it looks like the Mars-class will remain Federal Navy's primary cruiser, or at least be serving alongside the new Nova Terra-class, for the foreseeable future.

Owing to their relatively small number of warships, the Federal Navy has since its inception favored heavily armored ships that can remain operational even after taking considerable amounts of damage. The Mars-class is no exception. It is not the most heavily armed cruiser, though its four main gun turrets and 14 secondary turrets still provide a respectable amount of firepower, but its armor protection is second to none. However, the heavy armor comes at the cost of maneuverability, as the Mars-class has a notably slower rate of acceleration than the cruisers of other navies.
