I also came to that conclusion in my gallery. Nowadays I prefer to use lighting effects than shaders. ^^

Wow, did you do any touchup on this or is this strait render from the program?

There is some touchup, specially in brightness/contrast, but nothing that changes the render that much, just some tweaking of the levels to increase the softness feeling.
The smoke and background are postwork too.
Apart from that, the girl, clothes and gun are pretty much the same as in the original render.

How did you get the softer shading?

For the softer feeling there are three things:
- The skin tone included in SnowSultan's Animeyes product at DAZ that I tweaked to get the skin tone I wanted
- Environment light strong enough to flatten a bit the picture
- A single spot light for the shadows, with soft shadows to create smooth shading.
And some tweaking of the contrast and brightness in postwork
Truth to be told I had to do something like 20 test renders to get it right...
