Description One quarter of the way there. My goal is to do 100 of these little buggers in my sketchbook. Nothing stressful. Just sketches. Doodles. Scribblage. And lots of it.

Ha. Actually I'm pretty bad at lines usually. If I told you my secret, it wouldn't be a secret anymore, would it? In truth, I tend to draw everything very, very small. That way, I can avoid having to draw long lines and have them go all wobbly on me. So far it only works with gnarled, organic stuff, though.

I hate to tell you this, but none of these are supposed to be mutants.

7.5 years later, and I still haven't figured that out.

Tell me something, how did you gain the ability to do such small details? I've been trying to convert myself to a more gritty style of art similar to yours, yet I always end up with a semi-cartoon figure. Maybe you can suggest me to some artists that work in the details dept.

Hmm... Well, to be honest with you, it's just something I kind of stumbled upon one day. I had worked myself into a cartoony style, but one day I just sat down and started going nuts on the details and... there you have it. That would be the Moon piece. Not sure if that's still on deviantART. Might have to repost it.

As far as other artists who work in a similar style, or at least with lots of detail... First of all, just let me say it's no good to just start copying another artist's style. You're going to have to do some exploration and experimentation on your own. Sometimes it's more about feeling what you want to do, rather than thinking about it.

Anyway, I guess you could track down something by Art Adams. In fact, I should be looking at his stuff too. He's really good with textures. For examples, check out the first two images here: [link]

Aside from him, I can't think of anyone off the top of my head. Bernie Wrightson, maybe. Yes. Google him.

And that's about it. The actual drawing is what's most important. You can always sketch something out and experiment with different styles of finishing on a tracing paper overlay. When you're done, just photocopy the tracing paper and you've got your clean line work.

That's some really impressive line work, like sketches game developers make for a basis on enemies and such.
