Description I had already made a sheath for this axe, as many that see this will probably realise, but sadly it didn't not work as well as I had intended.
Thus I made this as a more practical alternative.
The decor was stitched on mostly due to lack of alternatives, this leather didn't want to be wet moulded.
I also made a leather wrap for the haft, both as decor and to protect the haft against impacts.

The axe is the GrΓ€nsfors two-lugged bearded axe, based on a 10th century original.

The edge extends noticeably down beyond where it is supported against the shaft. This 'hanging' edge is called a beard.

Actually, it's designed primarally for carpenting,shipbuilding to be more specific.
Allso, spreading the forace over a lager aria softens impact of the blow, so your theory is waaaay off...
