"What were those things?"
"Witherhounds. A mere dog is no match for a daemon, so Hunters perform some kind of ritual to infuse dogs with the essence of Inanis. They can track daemon magic and daemon scent, and their bite cannot be healed by our regeneration. It is difficult for a daemon to escape 'hounds once they have the scent. We fear them as much as the Hunters, because they're more than capable of tearing a daemon apart."
"Freaky."
"Indeed. They don't last very long after they've been infused, towards the end they just fall apart. No less dangerous for it, though. They go mad without their handlers. If their Hunters die, many witherhounds just wander off and attack some poor human or livestock, effectively self-destructing. What concerns me is that, if I surmise correctly, attacks of the sort are on the rise."
"Wait, all those crazy pit bull or rottweiler attacks have just been witherhounds?"
"Well, not all of them, but then who said you could trust everything on TV?"

The nice thing about witherhounds is that they give a chance to just be creepy. I was trying to go for a different palette in shading for each of them. These were the best final designs. Most of the witherhounds are generic in the book, except two: Billux, the purple-tongued mastiff who is Malus' dog, and Tema, the yellow eyed-pit bull who is Fen's. Witherhounds are basically dogs that can take on a daemon; they hide in plain sight because of a sort of racial, supressed memory of humanity that denies magic or daemons exist. You can't see a witherhound's true appearance unless you look really, really close ...
