Description Beelitz Sanatorium

my other photos from Beelitz: [link] [link]

"Built around 1900 and located west of Berlin, Beelitz Heilstätten (Beelitz sanatorium) was a medical facility designed to fight the tuberculosis desease which had caused an alarming mortal rate mostly in the lower classes of Germany at the end of 19th century. In its zenith the sanatorium accomodated up to 1200 patients in about 60 buildings.
After WWII, the sanatorium, because of its location in what was then “East Germany,” was used by the Soviet Army and became the largest and best equipped military hospital outside the Soviet Union. The whole complex is spread over a large area of about 200 hectares (2 million square meters) in pine forests."

...and now
"After German reunification the Red Army left 1994 and gave up the
facilities. Since then, most of the buildings are desolate."

I've never tried HDR but your spectacular HDR images inspire me to go ahead. I've been in Berlin twice collaborating on new works for the Deutsche Oper Ballet. However, I never saw this particular building you depict. In fact, I didn't go into the eastern part of the city, mainly because when I was there Berlin was still divided. I enjoyed Berlin immensely and very much want to return someday. Meanwhile, I will enjoy your Berlin- and Germany-related pictures. Fine work.

Such tranquility for a hospital. I would really luv to work there for a short session. Is the operation theatre still in good working condition?

Das gefällt mir auch sehr gut! Ich muss das mit dem HDR doch auch mal testen - bisher habe ich nur ein Infrarot-HDR gemacht...

Drezdany In reply to vw1956 [2009-07-06 20:36:50 +0000 UTC]

This shot captures the feel of slowly decaying grandeur that epitomises so many abandoned hospitals. They seem to me to be like once lovely women who are slowly getting older and more ravaged, but still you can see glimpses of the beauty they used to have.
