Well, mermaids that able to come to the land as a human (like in Splash) they need to return to the water eventually because they'd die if they don't.
Of course, they say real mermaid are a lot different than the ones we know in the Little Mermaid. They seduce men and kill women and children because they are jealous of us for having men and they don't. There are mermen, but they are more like monsters. That's why the mermaid seduce men and can put them under a spell.

yes, in this case a lot of that is the same deal, but in this story sirens simply hate humans all together because they are too evil, but there are the occasional sirens who fall in love with humans. if they're found out they lose their siren powers, are banished from their home, and become a human.

And they say that when a mermaid/siren dies, their soul seizes to exist or something like that. In the original story of the Little Mermaid when she dies, her body and soul doesn't disappear but turns to seafoam to still be around her prince and his wife because her heart learned about true love.
