It was evening when we decided to challenge the gym. It had been a long day. Was it only this morning that Plasma had struck Opelucid? It felt like so much longer.

Well, Maria was at the front. She swept through the whole gym, easy, with a little help from Leatho for the Pelliper. Energy Ball took out everything.

Marlon was waiting at the end of the gym. He was distracted - he had just come in from swimming. But he agreed to fight us.

The hardest of his team was his first, the Carracosta. It had Sturdy. So it survived the first Energy Ball, and launched a Rock Slide. Maria was frozen in fright for a full second. But then the rocks bounced off of her - and took a quarter of her health. It was nothing. She grinned, confident again.

Marlon healed his Carracosta, so the next Energy Ball smacked it back down to its Sturdy. But a third one hit it before it could attack, and it went down.

Then he sent out a Waillord - immense monster of a Pokemon. I'm surprised it fit in the gym pool. But one Energy Ball took it out, easy.

Then his Jellicent came out. It survived the Energy Ball and used Ominous Wind, which barely did anything except ruffle Maria's leaves. She had run out of Energy Ball PP, so she finished off the battle with Leaf Tornado, KO'ing the last Pokemon.

Marlon threw the Wave Badge to us, and then jumped in the water and swam off, whistling.

So I won my last gym badge. I'm thrilled! I can't believe it - eight gym badges, all eight, and not a single casualty.

Wow.

I went outside, congratulating Maria and promising to get her the biggest, best bowl of fruit I could buy. She was singing a victory march song she had heard on the radio. "Ve vill march march march, into zeh field o-of glory, march march march, into zeh songs zat vill be sung! Ve vill fight fight fight until zeh children know our story, ve'll fight fight fight till zeh battle's von!"

Alan was waiting outside, and he congratulated me on my victory too. He thought that the noises Maria was making were very pretty - "Almost as if she were singing." He laughed.

I grinned a little.

Then Marlon came up to us, beaming. "Hey, cool kids! Congrats on beating me, carrot-top."

"Uh, thanks."

"Hey, I just got a call from Cheren about some crazy Plasmic dudes or something. He mentioned you two - know anything about it?"

"Plasma?" Alan stared at him incredulously. "How do you not know about Plasma?"

The gym leader shrugged. "The sea takes care of itself, little dude, and if it isn't in the sea, it usually isn't my problem."

Alan grumbled. I turned to Marlon. "Team Plasma's a group that have been stealing Pokemon and things like that lately. They tried to liberate Pokemon a few years ago - they were better then. This morning they attacked Opelucid city."

"Yeesh, what a bummer." said Marlon. He looked intently at me. "So, these Plasma bros, what do you think? Are they good or bad?"

What a weird question. I paused, thinking. Then I answered slowly, "I think...a lot of them are good. And a lot of them are bad. Because in the end, they're people, too."

"Whoa." He nodded slowly. "That's deep, dudette. Real deep." He cracked his knuckles. "Speaking of deep, I'm going to go swimming. Maybe I'll, uh, find some Plasmer bros hiding in the water. Or something. Later, dudes!" And he ran off, hopping into the sea again.

"Weirdo." grunted Alan. He looked at me. "What do you think you'll do now?"

"I guess..." I looked off in the distance, at the cliffs framed against the sky. "I guess I'll head towards the Pokemon League."
