Description Couldnt figure out what to put this one under. Fan art or traditional.

Anyway, here is Universals half breed Balto running above a steam engine.

The engine, a 2-8-8-4 yellowstone class EM1 built by the Baldwin locomotive works during the end of WW2. It is one of the last steam locomotives to be built in the USA and was one of the largest. They where mountain power, working the steep Sand Patch and West End grades but it was their final years that they spent the rest of their life around my hometown...Wheeling, WV. They hauled Holloway humpers (no lie you pervert!) between Benwood and Holloway and return. One was to be donated to the city of Wheeling but the city refused. I believe one was to go to the B&O muesam in Baltimore but something happen and they where all scrapped.

Atleast I can go view Balto...

I'm assuming there are some of the engines my Dad used to see double or triple heading the coal drags on the line West of Bridgeport.

Yup, the EM1s, the EL2s, and Qs. Ive seen some pictures of the double and triple headed EM1s, impressive stuff.

Thanks!

Many engines that should of been saved, more specifically, by the larger railroads, where all scrapped. There isnt a railfan alive that wouldnt want to see, at one time the pride of the Pennsylvania railroad, a K4, running. [link] One sits, after spending 5 million in taxpayer money, in pieces. Another example is a New York Central Hudson, this, in its streamlined form [link] and more practical form. [link]

And by large railroads, the B&O was a two train mainline railroad, both PRR and NYC bragged about their 4 track systems. PRR was the largest, linking virtually every city and town in the northeast. Sadly, both railroads together (which was enventually part of 4 other railroads to form Conrail) are smaller than the 4 class ones today. Both PRRs and NYCs mainlines are 2 tracks, victims of technology, no passenger trains, and a rapidly dissapearing industrial base.

One EM1 was almost saved...almost. But like I said in the drawing, atleast one can go see Balto...either in his Cleveland home or his statue in Central Park.

No worries, I loved the drawing!

It's a same that the raiways aren't as large as they used to be, but my readership of Trains magazine gives me hope that something better may be ahead.

As for trains being saved I can believe it. Their's always some that slip the net, sadly. Their's also always some interesting attempts at preservation such as the LMS Duchess, restored to it's glorious streamlined Red and Gold [link] but removed from operation to sit in a museum. I can understand the K4 being wishd back, they were superb machines from wht i've heard. It would almost be like having a Black 5 [link] preserved over here!

All the best!

These mighty machines operated on the tracks next to my house back in the day! This was during the 1950's when they were regulated to rural areas. Up north of where i live the B&O kept a roundhouse full of them as late as 1960. Much to the dissapointment of railfans and history buffs alike, none were preserved. Ill bet you that the mighty EM1 would have made a wonderful excursion locomotive for the Chessi System.
A reply to trainfanatic's post. Even if every surviving steam locomotive was operable, there would still be interest in them. You arent a real railfan if you like them because there are so few. True railfans love trains regardless of how many there are. In fact, a train yard full of steam locomotives would attrackt thousands of people! Even if half of them were the same wheel arrangement there would stilll be strong interest in them. Thats part reason why there are about 20-30 Berkshires preserved. Within the next decade you could see maybe as many as 6 of them opreating.

An EM1 would of been a fine engine to use on the Chessie express but doubtful that Chessie would of used a EM1...just too large for some of the areas 2101 went.

I agree with you and I agreed with trainfanatic, "So if there was 500 operable steam engines, the interest would be there." That is part of my replie to trainfanatic.

And yes, true railfans love trains regardless of how many there are. If that wasnt true, than no one would be taking pictures of Norfolk Southerns 1000 Dash9s, Union Pacifics 1000 SD70Ms, or any GE built in the last 15 years.

Trainfanatic4960 [2009-12-06 06:07:31 +0000 UTC]

So true. It's a shame how many great steamers were scrapped.
Of course, if they'd all survived, what would be special about seeing them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DragonWolfACe In reply to Trainfanatic4960 [2009-12-07 08:06:22 +0000 UTC]

Its not a matter if all survived. There is 8 Big Boys and not one is operable. Its absolutely amazing that a NYC Hudson wasnt saved.

Of corse you ask what is special about seeing them. What about any train with a question like that. At this point in the economy, Im happy to get a train on a sunny day. Doesnt matter what the power is. So if there was 500 operable steam engines, the interest would be there.
