Description My Inquisitor from Dragon Age: Inquisition. Well, sort of. For the majority of the game she also has Dirthamen's vallaslin (facial tattoo), but I opted not to draw it here.

Was kind of let down by the hairstyles available (as per Bioware's norm -- they never have hairstyles I really like. . .) so I invented one. Based on the half-ponytail mesh, this is just an alternative which includes triple braids on either side. The hairstyle was literally my whole point for drawing this one.

Also note that she has eighteen earrings (nine on either side; the wolf's fang earring seen here is the only one which is not a simple gold loop) and plenty of freckles. Freckles are hard to draw. This is the third technique I've used to draw them so far. . .still not satisfied. Freaking freckles. It's so much easier to draw them as simple black dots.

The scar on her eye she got as a little girl when she slipped while climbing a tree and fell. It's her most embarrassing story -- such a cool-looking scar, and she got it falling out of a tree.

For those who may be unaware, in DA:I, choosing to be an elf automatically makes you a Dalish elf and you MUST have a facial tattoo to match. (It's a rite of passage for the Dalish; you aren't considered an adult until you've received yours.) Your clan's name is Lavellan, your Keeper is Istamaethoriel and by default you're strangely disliked by both of your fellow Elvhen companions. Interesting little twist you brought in there, Bioware.

I also gave my character numerous body tattoos, one of which would be visible here, but I haven't finalized the design yet so you get nothing. Was working on this a hell of a long time and finally got frustrated with editing it and redoing this bit and that bit and just ugh, take it. I'm done.

(Her name is Tallyn btw.)

Many thanks! Though officially I trashed the design for my dear Tallyn. It's sad like that.

I was wondering when the Inquisition stuff was going to start appearing. I don't blame you for enhancing your character's look. That character creator was pretty lame. Bioware always gives you all these sliders to mess around with every inch of the face...and then gives you five hairstyles. But anyway, you reminded me I should think about trying out some of the other races. I played as a human and I forgot that each race has it's own story and interactions. These dwarven shenanigans intrigue me.

You should use hard outlines more. They work well with your shading.

DragonsLover1 In reply to The-G [2015-04-16 16:04:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure it helps that the outlines compliment the surrounding colors, too.

The Qunari only get four hairstyles, but like 30 horn styles. What bugged me was that I couldn't pick a horn and hair style I liked, so my first character was bald and that pissed me off. Doesn't help that the character creation lighting differs from what you get for the majority of the game, too -- I discovered the hard way that you should be very subtle with makeup, especially the blush. Note also that it's exceptionally difficult to make an attractive Qunari female. The male I made is freaking gorgeous (intentionally), but the females? That's way harder.

Sorry. Ranting.

I still haven't played the dwarves beyond the starting scenes, actually. In fact, Eric played one through that section but I haven't yet. The dwarves do not interest me.

Inquisition stuff!   She's very pretty, I love the freckles and eye make-up you did.  I was actually satisfied with the hair options, save for Qunari's (Seriously, just one "long-hair" option?), but I love the one you designed!

"Majority" of the game?  Does that mean you did...the thing I won't say outright to avoid spoilers?  If so, my condolences.

Oh hell yes they did. ;D The first one especially. Just a little le smooch and then Solas is like, wait where do you think you're going?! *yank smooch make out scene*

I find it kind of cheating that you looked up the scenes though. I only did that for Bull, Blackwall and Dorian and only because I doubt I'm going to romance any of them. (At this point the only reason I'm not romancing Dorian is because I can't make a satisfactory male elf to bone him. It's very sad.)

Loved it

I only did it for Solas because I already did a female elf inquisitor and I didn't want to make another one.  Plus I ship him with...someone else, but that's neither here nor there.  I plan on romancing'm all.  If you're curious, I've finished the game with F!Adaar and Sera, F!Lavellan and Cullen, and I'm currently playing through M!Trevalyn and Iron Bull.

I actually have a bunch of games going, myself. I did technically beat the game Solavellan style, but I ended up disliking my Lavellan so I started over. Aside from my new one, I have an M!Adaar/Cassandra game, an F!Adaar/Bull game, F!Trevalyn/Sera, F!Travelyn/Cullen and M!Travelyn/Josephine.

You may discover I don't like dwarves much. I am, however, planning an M!Dwarf game in which I'm a dick to everyone and will accept party members and then treat them like shit until they leave. (I understand you get to punch Solas in the face if you do it this way, this should be satisfying for my poor Solavellan feels.)

kamikamiya In reply to DragonsLover1 [2015-04-11 21:44:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure what order the rest of mine are going to be in, but it's F!Trevalyn (Mage this time)/Josephine, M!Adaar/Cassandra, M!Lavellan/Dorian, and for my F!Cadash I though about Blackwall just to do the romance, but I can't seem to get into them as a couple so for that I might just flirt with Harding.

I'm alright with dwarves, I just can't come up with an interesting M!Cadash character.  And I can't bring myself to do a jerk playthrough, I feel so bad!

We should post screenies of our Inquisitors somewhere.

Okay so I went down to your Lavellan and reblogged it with my Lavellan's screenshots for comparison. Not that you asked.

Y'know what's really interesting though? Solas, and his responses to you based on race and class. For example, I find it hilarious that you bein Dalish means he's kind of aggressive with you from the start, yet he only romances an elf. PLUS, and this is really intriguing, there's dialogue with him you can ONLY get if you're a Dalish mage. Talk to the sum'vabitch. And also a lot of the Elvhen spoken in-game is translated for you if you're Dalish. I thought that was interesting.

Oh we can talk forever about this honey, I am loving it.

She's cute!  And their names rhyme!  You seem to be better with the make-up than me.  Maybe it's 'cause I don't use it much in real life, but I have trouble making it look good.

Yeah, with the Cullen romance you only get one unique dialogue as an elf.  And romancing Sera as a Qunari is great because she has a preference for them over the other races.  I also heard Blackwall and a Cadash have some unique dialogue as well.

So...Hawke or Warden sacrifice.  Thoughts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-12 19:18:48 +0000 UTC]

Meh, Tallyn was the third elf girl I made and like the 6th overall cause Qunari ladies are freaking HARD so I had some practice.

I like some of the dialogue Sera and Bull have if you're not a Qunari woman. She's all like "all Qunari women big like you?" and he's all like "oh hell yeah" and she gets giggly. It's adorable. I also hear that if you're a Dalish girl and romance Sera, in later companion dialogue, Sera calls you "the exception" cause she dun like elves.

Warden, but that one was easy for me cause I romanced Alistair as a human and made him king, so HE wasn't the warden in that scene.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kamikamiya In reply to DragonsLover1 [2015-04-12 19:47:56 +0000 UTC]

For me, the human male was the hardest (I've made trial runs for all my planned inquisitors).

Considering my entire family said Magdalene looked "mannish", Sera's comments were much appreciated.

And if you're a dwarf, she calls you squishy and thinks your adorable.

In my main run, I romanced him as a city elf and didn't make him king, so I had to sacrifice my favorite Hawke.  .  Luckily I used the same Hawke for my second run where Loghain was the Warden.

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-12 20:13:33 +0000 UTC]

Haven't played far enough into my dwarf-quisitors to get that dialogue yet.

I used a default world for one run in which Hawke was a male mage and unromanced, so I felt no guilt in sacrificing him just to get the story out of Varric. I am not a kind person. I swear though, if I had to pick between killing Alistair and my fave Hawke, that would be a really hard decision. Ultimately I like my Hawke/Fenris pairing better than any of mine with Alistair, so I guess Alistair is going. . .sadness.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kamikamiya In reply to DragonsLover1 [2015-04-13 02:06:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, my fave Hawke is unromanced (Not 'cause I ship her and Varric with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns *shifty eyes, shift eyes*), and that was ultimately the deciding factor.

Also, someone on Tumblr mentioned putting Solas in the "plaid-weave armor of shame"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-14 03:57:19 +0000 UTC]

Gawd, that plaid-weave looks so ridiculous. All silliness aside, I never wanted to romance Varric. Or Merrill or Anders, really. Isabela was kinda fun but ultimately I only really liked Fenris in a romantic way (which made it all the worse that in my first game he betrayed me and I ended up killing him in the final battle ).

I can't wait to put whatsherface, the cousin to the Empress, in a jester outfit with bad shoes. Maybe I ought to work on my dwarf dick character already. Or I suppose I could save this humiliation for my M!Adaar. That could work.

Y'know, I actually have a working headcanon for each game which involves as many PC characters as I can. Like in Origins, I have seven -- one for each origin story, plus one more mage cause the human and elf mages have different last names. And in DA2 I have four Hawkes; Garrett is still the oldest and a mage, but then I added Marian as a rogue pretty much as a cheap plot device to keep all the siblings alive cause Y DEY GOTTA DY YO!? (That, and I wanted to actually use all romance options but ultimately could find no one fitting for Carver so he just went to the Wardens, Marian got Fenris, Bethany got Anders and Garrett got polyamorous with Merrill and Isabela. ;D )

So basically I'm doing the same with Inquisition and thus far my elf rogue Tallyn is the main chicky-do, with the Anchor and the cool titles and all that, plus I'm carefully weaving at least one of each other gender/race in. So far I actually have three Adaars and they're all siblings. . .and also their parents had a sense of humor when naming them. You have Arishok, male warrior who's fully aware of what they did there, and his sisters Hexya and Vexya, twin mages. (I went through great pains to make those sisters look like twins when creating them you have no idea.) The three of them willingly joined after hearing how Haven was attacked by a fucking dragon.

Then I have a little group of two mages and a warrior (running theme here haha). One mage is a male Dalish elf; he joined a Circle of his own accord years prior when he found limits to what his clan could teach (name pending; as I said, I can't get his look right). Then I have Evelyn and Jarrell, both distant cousins in the Travellyn family. Evelyn was a mage all her life and met the elf guy in the Circle. She's also notably albino and has a weak, sickly constitution which forces her to use poultices and potions daily. Jarrell, on the other hand, is notably black. He was to join the Templar order and even had begun training at the same Circle tower (Ostwick, I believe?) when the war struck. He grabbed Evelyn, Evelyn grabbed elf dude, and the three of them fled before bloodshed could reach them. However, after the Conclave blew up, they joined the armies at Haven.

Thinking I might have the two Cadash characters attempt to spy on the Inquisition for the carta and get taken prisoner. The girl, Malika, turns on the carta easy enough to protect the world, but the dude (forgot his name) is, as I said, a dick. He agrees to help but is a douche about everything. Ultimately I'd have each of these characters present in Skyhold but be sent on war room missions instead of going with Tallyn as an active party member. It keeps them out of the main story dealies unless necessary while also letting them meet, interact with and romance all eight possible peoples.

Eric just looked over and commented that this is a long reply. I agree and thus will shut up now.

People really need to stop apologizing for sending me long comments.  I was worried I ended our conversation and then saw this and was like "Yes!  Look at that beautiful thing!"  Plus it gives me an opening to send my own long comment

Man, DA:2 has too many ways for you to accidentally lose a companion.

Nowyn did.  It's pretty hilarious.  The only reason I'm not going to have Saemus do that is so I can get her bow.

Me, I have six Wardens (Just the human mage) and five Hawke's, my favorite twice and then one for each love interest (Except for Sebastian,  because Bleh Sebastian).  Sadly, I don't have an everybody lives AU, but I do like to ship Bethany and Fenris for the runs where she's alive, and Isabela and Merrill for the one's where they aren't romanced (And the one where Hawke doesn't give Isabela to the Arishok.  Oh, Semi-Jerk Hawke).

For Inquisition, I like to think that all of my Inquisitor's existed, but depending on the run don't make it/never went to the Conclave.  Like my two Trevalyn's are twins who were separated when the girl (Darcy) was taken to the Circle when they were kids.  They don't see each other again until the Convlave right before one of them runs off to help the Divine and the other dies in the explosion (Wow, I'm kind of terrible).

Then there's Nowyn (The Keeper's first) and Falonmar(The m!Lavellan) who were pretty good friends, but only one of them gets sent to the Conclave.  I've been trying to come up with Companion Quests for my Inquisitor's and I imagine that the Lavellan's would feature an appearance by the other one.

I can't picture Madgalene and my m!Adaar (Aban) being related, but I like to think Mags and Freyja met and became friendly at the Conclave and maybe Aban and Falonmar 'till the explosion (Man, what is with me?).

"I don't see why we should join--There's a dragon?!?  Let's go!".  I admire your ability to make Inquisitor's look related.  Saemus and Darcy only share a hair color and skin tone.

I can't believe I have yet to make an albino Dragon Age character.  So is she albino but with black facial structure, or are they that distantly related?

It does make me sad that the love interests don't ind love in some of my playthroughs...

Do you ever use the character creator to make your character's kids?  Or is that just me?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-15 01:41:59 +0000 UTC]

One thing that bothers me is that the love interests never initiate the actual romances (except for Isabela who wants to bang ya right off the bat -- that's half the reason my first Hawke failed to romance Fenris. I had no idea I'd gotten stuck in the Isabela romance when I accepted her banging. )

As for my twin Adaars, they look alike cause I screenshot every single slider that I changed and eyeballed each one. It was fun. Technically their names are actually Hexxas and Vexxas, but they picked funny nicknames later in life to better reflect their personalities (Vexya is more about fucking with people than Hexya is, who is more serious). Hex is set up to romance Sera eventually, and Vex is after some Bull lovin'. Arishok is actually fully hetero but also a hardcore flirt. His personality is set up to where he's super gruff and almost violent towards men, but all women (particularly human women ) get flirts, romance and sweetness from him. Playboy. He's super into Cassandra, too.

Technically the three of them were more concerned about the dragon -- it followed, logically, that if a dragon is involved, then every possible able-bodied person should help the Inquisition. (They're also unaware that this method of thinking is very Qunari-ish.)

As for Evelyn and Jarrell, they're something like fourth cousins. Jarrell's mother is half-black and his father is 100%, but on Evelyn's side it's straight whities, so they are just that distantly related (although they could very well be siblings as far as blood is concerned, since racial features can be extremely varied -- have you heard about the black/white twin girls? Their mother is black, their father is white, they're twins, but one looks distinctly white and the other distinctly black. It's really cool.)

. . . . . .I have never considered making my couples' kids in the character creator, but that is freaking brilliant. I should do that sometime. (So far I don't even have any kids for them. . .just lots and lots of side stories. )

kamikamiya In reply to DragonsLover1 [2015-04-15 03:47:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's why I never flirted outside of who I'm trying to romance.  Though for Darcy Trevelyan I'm going to try one flirt for all the flirtable ladies.  She tries to play the dashing rogue, but gets all flustered around Josephine.

Oh the lengths we go to for roleplaying.

Magdalene's this sweet, optimistic, "let's help everyone" ultimate paragon of a hero, and an Andrastian.  I love her and Sera together so much .  Aban has a weird and goofy personality, but is completely stoic at all times, so no one can tell if he's joking or not.  Think Garnet from Steven Universe (If you watch).  Bisexual, but completely in love with Cass.

My Trevelyans' mother is from Rivain, so they're half-black half-white.  That twin thing is crazy!  I need to look them up.

It's pretty great.  I still have a few I want to do.  Needless to say, it's easiest to use the creator from the game their parents are from (You can download just the Origins character creator somewhere).

Please feel free to give me anymore headcanons you want to share.

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-15 16:25:33 +0000 UTC]

It's easier for Inquisition cause it lets you know when you're starting the romance or ending it. Handy tool, that.

My Evelyn, the albino, is also 100% religious and considering she gets with Cullen, they fit together pretty well. In my headcanon she also tries some unorthadox methods to clear the lyrium from him, to ease his suffering and help him resist its effects (with his permission). She just feels terrible about his situation.

. . .Just occurred to me that by my own rules of one-gender-per-race, plus my Adaar twins, I've made nine characters. It would fit nicely with the whole specialization thing, had I actually planned it out. As it is, I have four mages, three warriors and two rogues. . .hmm. Might just have to make my other elf a rogue to balance it out. (Or just count my self-insertion human rogue and then everything is hunky-dory.)

I am not aware of this show you mentioned. Keep in mind I don't watch TV anymore. At all. There are shows I watch, but I download them by the season.

Ooohhh, don't get me started on my headcanons. Right now I'm stuck in Solavellan mode and have plenty of side-stories, continuations and feels for them. Tears have been had. I am way too cruel to them.

Nowyn worships the elven pantheon, naturally.  Her and Cullen make it work somehow.  What kind of unorthodox?

I've got three rogues, three mages, and one warrior.  This is the first time I've ever considered playing as one.  Warriors never seemed that interesting to me.

It's an excellent cartoon on Cartoon Network.  I  get that, being at college made me lower my "actual television" watching.  I've been able to watch all my need-to-watch shows online.

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-16 06:29:58 +0000 UTC]

Heh, my Tallyn doesn't believe in the Elvhen pantheon, despite being Dalish. She believes all the stories of Elvhen gods are entirely stories, and that MAYBE there were once people with their names, but those people are long dead (or at least gone by choice). Either that or these gods chose to leave. Ultimately, to her, that means that either the gods abandoned them, or they weren't gods to begin with, so regardless she doesn't worship them. Her mindset is basically, "If something needs to be done, you should do it. If you succeed, that's because of your skill and will, and you should receive the appropriate credit." People worshiping gods just irritates her.

One thing I did with her is that I made her a rogue, but gave her the intense wish to be a mage. Ho ho, made a character a class other than their preferred? Ain't I a stinker?

I could give you like EVERYTHING on Tallyn, but I warn you, it's a lot. She's a very complex character. I could go on forever about this girl. . .

kamikamiya In reply to DragonsLover1 [2015-04-17 03:41:43 +0000 UTC]

Nowyn's not super hardcore religious, and it doesn't bother her that so many city elves are Andrastian, but it really irritates her that everything is so Chantry centric (Seriously, how many times did I have to say "I don't believe in the Maker" while playing her?).

That's interesting, I haven't made a character who doesn't like their class before.

I think it's interesting how you wen for more same race couples and I went for more mixed race ones (Maybe, I'd have to tally them again).  And then we both had Adaar/Cassandra

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-17 06:04:51 +0000 UTC]

Tallyn's issue is more that when actions are done, credit is given to this god or that god instead of the person doing it. According to both the Andrastrian religion and the Elvhen one, the "gods" are missing anyway, at the very least having abandoned their "children". And she doesn't find that worthy of worship.

. . .Actually I haven't done same race couples hardly at all. (Except for Origins, where you didn't really have much choice in the matter.) I did have a City Elf/Leliana couple in Origins, though. In DA2 I had Hawke/Fenris as my main. . . *counts them out* Qunari/Cass, Qunari/Sera, Qunari/Bull, Human/Cullen, Human/Josephine, Dwarf/Blackwall, Dalish/Solas (which doesn't even count cause it's the only option for him), Dalish/Dorian (considered giving him a Qunari lover too but I don't want to strain his poor mage body XD). 4/8 interacial, 4/8 racial.

DA2 can only have 2/4 racial couples. . .so that's 6/12 for each. . .then for Origins I only had one interacial soooo. . .7/16 interacial, 9/16 racial. Pretty good divide, I guess. (I also shipped my Noble/Casteless dwarves but that's all fandom stuff.)

I was just comparing our Inquisitors, and I think I was counting you Josephine/M!Trevelyan and not my Josephine/F!Trevelyan.  Sorry, my bad.

I don't know why, but it's hard for me to get into the same race pairings in the games where your race is an option.

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-18 06:33:51 +0000 UTC]

For fun, I guess? I actually do tend to lean towards same race pairings in my games where race is an option, but I also tend to lean towards non-human PCs, so that's often a factor. I'll start out playing an elf in some game and then realize my favorite love interest is not an elf and it spirals from there. I also tend to stick to my first character like glue with some remodeling (I'm on my second 'Tallyn', in fact, and now that I know s'more things I may even start over a third time) used later. I think I beat Origins with a redheaded human noble like four times now. It's hard to get the perfect game. . .though with the Keep I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Speaking of, I need to make a few more of those Keep games. . .

ANYWAY. If you've done backstory/continuation work for your main PC, wanna swap stories? It could be a fun thing to do.

Magdalene Adaar would be my main Inquisitor (With Maleficent Tabris and Marin Hawke for DA and DA:2, but you already know the major backstory stuff with them, though if there's anything you want to know just ask), and her story begins with a Ben-Hassreth agent (Who will later be called Ashkost) who gets fed up with the way Qunari run things, and a Saarabas (Who will later be called Talsay) who wants freedom (Both dudes).  They meet, fall in love, and form a plan with a Qunari woman and a baby to escape to the Free Marches.  Things go south, and the woman doesn't make it, but the two men do and raise the baby as their own.  They find a secluded cottage in a forest semi-close to a peaceful village, where the villagers are definitely wary of them, but leave them in peace.  So Ashkost and the child occasionally visit the village (Talsay never does, being a mage and not having the best grasp of Common) when they need something.  During one trip, the child goes into the Chantry and meets a kindly old Sister and learns about Andrastianism and gets super into it, eventually converting.  At some point, her parents let her pick her own name ('Cause y'know, screw the Qun), and she chooses Magdalene.  Mags grows up wanting to be a Chantry sister more than anything, but then something traumatic happens when she reaches adulthood (It's something to do with the village ostracizing her because of her appearance, but I don't have the specifics yet).  She realizes that that's never going to happen, and goes off and joins the Valo-kas, so at least she can earn some more money to take care of her parents, and be able to travel safely because she's around other Qunari, except she doesn't really fit in with them either, and then Boom, Conclave, Inquisitor, Saved the World.  For her "Companion Quest", it'd be her and character of choice going back to the village of the kindly old sister had died, and Mags explaining her backstory, and then character reassuring her that the Maker loves her and she doesn't need to be a part of the Chantry to serve him (Considering I'm an atheist, this is kind of weird storyline for me to write).  For her future, all I've got planned is her and Sera adopting an elf girl and loving her to pieces.

Now, who is Tallyn Lavellan?  Also, who her closest, platonic friend in the Inquisition?  For Magdalene, it's Cole.

Now THAT is a backstory. I will suggest, however, that you utilize a few more paragraphs. They don't have to be super correctly spaced or whatever, it'll just make it easier for me to stay on the same line. (I lost my place a few times. Possibly because there's something up with my eyes, idk.)

Tallyn, to begin with, is Dalish, but she wasn't born Dalish. She was actually born in an Elven settlement populated by her immediate family (as far as she knows; it was a long time ago). The actual number of familial relations has been steadily changing since I originally created this story, but it's never dropped below 17 + Tallyn. Aside from aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents (to whom she referred to them all as "Ga" and "Pa"), she had her parents, four older brothers and a younger sister.

When she was five, a mercenary company came to the settlement and killed everyone except Tallyn. She survived only because she wasn't actually present at the time; earlier that night she'd gotten into an argument with her parents and her father sent her to bed. "No supper until you apologize to your mother!" he said. (She can't remember what the argument was about and feels immense guilt for it now.) She decided then, in the way of stubborn 5-year-olds, that she was going to feed herself, the way the Dalish do, and set out into the surrounding woods. . .where she promptly got lost. (Note also that her family didn't believe in the Elven gods, mainly for having zero knowledge of them beyond a few names, but they DID have several Dalish clans which occasionally went through the area, so instead of telling godly stories at night, they told Dalish stories. Thus, to Tallyn, the Dalish were essentially gods to her until she actually became one.)

She ended up falling asleep in the woods, and when she woke up, a "light" led her back home. It was a pyre. The deceased bodies of her family were in it, burning. One arm actually hung out, with a bracelet on the wrist that she recognized as her mother's. Being a 5-year-old, again, she figured if she got her mother out of the fire, everything would be fine, so she grabbed on and pulled -- and scarred her right palm where the bracelet burned her.

It was actually several days later, after the fire had burned out, when a Dalish runner investigated the area. They'd seen the fire from far away, knew it was in about the same area as the settlement and decided to check on them. The scout, named Valderon, was the one who found Tallyn among the dead bodies of her family (now reduced to charred skeletons). By then she was starving and so struck by grief she didn't even recognize the man as a friend. He charmed her with jerky and lulled her into taking a nap, then carried her back to the clan (Lavellan).

It took years before she heard what had actually happened that night (as the Keeper had been investigating the matter), and years more before Tallyn was allowed to seek vengeance. One of the stipulations of gaining information was that she had to be an "adult", so despite not believing in the Elven gods, Tallyn agreed *coughpesteredcough* to have a vallaslin. She chose Dirthamen's honor because it was pretty. She was also 13 when she underwent this, which Istamaethorial only agreed to because Tallyn had been bothering her about it for two years and she hadn't expected Tallyn to sit through it. But a deal's a deal, so Tallyn was given her first lead about her family's killers.

Her vengeance actually took her over three years to complete, because the mercenary band had all retired and gone to different places in Thedas. She went all over Orlais, Ferelden, the Free Marches, and even a bit into Rivain. In total, she killed nine mercenaries, and at the end found the name of an arl who'd given them their task, so she wheeled around and went to deal with him, too. (She actually ended up killing the arl AND his wife, because his wife woke up during the deed. 16-year-old Tallyn had not one fuck to give over the lives of humans.)

I have various other side-stories to her history, given I made her the Inquisitor when she was 28 (though she still looked 19, according to Solas -- and even 17 according to Varric. Whoo Elven genes!) Most of her side stories revolve around how she got certain tattoos, because she has a fair number of them, and the majority of them were added to hide a scar or another. Her explanation for this is that when people see a scar and ask about it, she either doesn't want to tell or they regret hearing the tale. When they see a tattoo, however, she can simply answer that it looks pretty, and why not? -- and they just accept that.

She also has a nickname kind of well-known among the Dalish clans (Asha Banal'ras, the Lady in the Shadows) which goes back to the fact that she once murdered another clan on a moonless night while they all slept. See, I gave her clan a habit -- when meeting another clan, the Keepers have a chat and, if everyone is willing, swap a member of each clan. When they meet again, the members swap back. The point of this is to broaden horizons and bring in differing opinions. Tallyn was swapped out once, to a clan populated almost entirely by mages -- though she hadn't known that at the time.

Turns out, this clan was doing a shitton of blood magic rituals to bind demons, intent on eventually raising an army so grand they could wipe out all humans and reinstate the Elven empire. When Tallyn learned of this, she knew she'd be sacrificed in the next ritual (all of which were performed on full moon nights), so she pretended to be all for it. The mages tended to play nice with everyone at first, see, but ultimately they sacrificed all non-mages (or unwilling mages) for this purpose. One of those "the ends justify the means" sort of cults.

They figured she was with them (which she wasn't; by this time she'd come to grips with her younger self's racism and hated how she once was, so she wasn't about to let any form of genocide happen) so they let her be, playing nice and whatnot. Then, on a new moon night, she stealthily went through the camp and slit every throat she encountered. Over twenty mages were in that clan, plus about the same amount of non-mages (some willingly helping). She didn't manage a full, clean murder-spree, though -- four mages were still alive when an alert was called by a lookout. All of the mages summoned demons, stacking the odds heavily against Tallyn.

Lucky for her, the demons had been playing nice, too, and they were far from being controlled by a couple mages. That, and they were far more interested in the mountain of corpses she'd left behind. The battle against the remaining mages was tough, but they could hardly see and Tallyn has a sixth sense for locating other living beings -- mages are way easy for her to find, too, eyes or no eyes. So though she was outnumbered, she still had the advantage in the dark and managed to kill them. The fight against the demons was way harder, given they could sense things the same way she could, though she still had one advantage left: the demons didn't understand the physical world and were hindered by how things didn't move out of their way through will alone.

*looks up* *looks down* That's a lot of backstory. Sorry. But I do have one more tidbit to share: Tallyn isn't quite 100% fully elven. She's also part spirit. (This I use to explain how she has that sixth sense, like the red, blue and yellow blips on the minimap.)

Before she was born, a number of wisps crossed through the Veil through a small hole. One of them eventually reached the aforementioned settlement when Tallyn's mother was in labor -- with her. The wisp watched, all curiosity and intrigue, as the baby was born. And it hung around, as it had never met elves before (or anything with a greater sense of identity than wolves, cats and deer). However, baby-Tallyn could see the wisp where none others could, and the wisp liked this. (She could see magic itself, in fact, and the movements of the Veil around them.) It used to dart around, be silly and make the baby laugh. Until, one day, it decided to give her a hug (as it had seen so many others do).

Unfortunately/fortunately, touching the baby drew it in, and now Tallyn was possessed. Neither the wisp nor the baby understood what was happening, exactly, so Tallyn began fussing and crying a lot in confusion. The wisp had entirely different senses than she did, after all, and it was horrifying for her. Eventually the wisp just withdrew deep inside her, taking its senses with it, but in so doing it took her (as I like to call it) mage-sight with it. This calmed baby-Tallyn a great deal. In the years that followed, the two merged into a single being, differing thoughts becoming one and all of the senses evening out. It can still get confusing sometimes, because Tallyn has the generic five senses and then this other one which is totally separate from the others, and translating how a person's presence "feels" is like trying to explain synesthesia, but it's proven invaluable to her as a person.

A tiny addition to this bit is that Solas, when he learns that Tallyn is technically possessed and shares her story, believes that she was actually born a mage, since only mages can see "movements in the Veil" like she had described. Which means the wisp accidentally took all of her mage ability with it when it locked itself away. Solas is thus a bit hopeful that it can be unlocked again the same way, but he doesn't tell Tallyn this before The Big End, so she's still ignorant. Fun times.

Oh, and as for her best friend, it's Dorian. She finds him hilarious and spunky and just the right amount of risque. Though she doesn't tell anyone this, she admits to herself that if Dorian weren't gay, she would've had a hell of a time picking being him and Solas. She loves them both very much, just for entirely different reasons. The thing she loves most about Solas, for example, is his stories and his talks. She loves just discussing things with him. (That somewhat goes back to the wisp that possessed her; by the time it joined with her, it was well on its way to becoming a spirit of curiosity, so she has an insatiable hunger for knowledge, exploration and experimentation.)

. . .I end this here because it's a huge amount of text and I don't want to overwhelm you. Suffice to say I have several times this amount in my head, unpublished.

Thank you!  And sorry, I didn't realize how long it was.

Whoof, that's tragic and dark, and amazingly well thought out.  I think an entire Dalish clan full of Blood Mages is both creepy and fascinating.

Yeah, Nowyn's 28 too, but I'm not sure if I captured that well.

An in universe explanation for the blips is pretty great.  So it's kind of like Wynne's deal, except she's alive?  Solas not telling you things.  Where have I heard that before?  And who doesn't love Dorian?

Like I said before, s'all good.  I've got pretty fleshed out backstories for all my Inqusitiors, except for my male Lavellan's and male Adaar's.

And for some levity, here's a few fun facts about Magdalene

--Contrary to her natural Qunari appearance (Or perhaps to counter it), she loves fancy dresses.  Was disappointed she couldn't wear one to the Empress's Ball.  Also a hopeless romantic
--Her favorite animal are unicorns.  She even brought one to Skyhold from the Fallow Mire, despite her companions insisting it was, in fact an "Undead horse with a sword through it's skull"
--Likes collecting hats, despite her inability to wear them (Which was inspired by my despair at not being able to equip the awesome hats I would find while playing as her).  Cole and her are responsible for that thing Solas wears to Halamshiral
--Is deathly afraid of spiders (Like all the Inquisitor's are, I guess), which caused a problem when she found one one day in Sera's room.  Small room + Panicked Giantess = Yelling Sera + Giant Mess
--Loves "Sera was Never" and often hums it to her self even though Sera thinks the song is weird.
--Sera calls her "Teetness"

Now you have me wondering what else I can say about Tallyn. Quite a lot, actually.

Lessee. Have you actually beat the game yet? In particular, have you done Cole's personal quest? Cause I made Tallyn the main voice in that quest, considering in my version they're very alike. Oh, and for the trip through the Fade during the Warden quest, I added a new area, in which the Nightmare demon had "harvested" a series of fears from Tallyn, including all related memories. I put in seven different fears total, one of which is a constant fear but has not yet happened to her.

One of them, in particular, is a scene in which she was caught by a bunch of humans (during her 3-year Thedas-wide adventure). They tied her hands behind her back, her feet to a really big rock, and tossed her in a lake. By the time she got free she was technically drowning and she coughed up a lot of water when she reached the surface, but she survived. What's significant about this is that it led to her feeling justified in her hatred of humans, but in later years she realized she caused that very event to occur (by being a total bitch, namely). It's given her a great deal of perspective.

She calls Solas "ma lath" (my love). ;D She also knows an ancient Elvhen song, though she doesn't know how she knows it (she's been hearing the lyrics in the Fade her whole life, so it's in the back of her mind) and she can't translate it. At one point Solas hears her singing it and investigates, then translates it for her, and though he's shocked she knows it (and kind of turned on, honestly), it makes her start pestering him for lessons in Elvhen.

Basically, before Solas she knew 62 words in Elvhen, total. After some lessons it gets up into the hundreds and she has a far greater grasp of sentence structure. She's still not fluent, exactly, but she's capable of teaching it way better than any Dalish could. She also can't read ancient Elvhen at all. In fact, before running into actual ancient runes, she had no idea it was written with a different alphabet.

As for the fancy dress thing at the Winter Palace, most people just draw their Inquisitor in a better outfit (which I am doing as well). I have the story set up to where Vivienne offers the services of her seamstress to make Tallyn a grand gown for the ball, and Tallyn suggests using Embrium as the main thought behind its design. It ends up looking very Elven, so you can imagine Solas was floored by it. *waggly brows* (I have an entire oneshot already written out about that dress, the quest, and the aftermath, including that Tallyn and Solas get freaky afterwards.)

Actually, Tallyn isn't afraid of spiders. She's afraid of nothing physical or the lack thereof (as Sera is), so my reasoning for the spider-enemies in the Fade is that the Nightmare demon just went default for her, since none of her fears can be physically represented. A Qunari terrified of spiders is hilarious, though, is hilarious and beautiful and I love it. Also, why "teetness"? I'm confused.

Yup!  I've beaten it with Madgalene and Nowyn (Currently I'm working on Saemus).  Both times I've made him human, it seemed like the healthiest choice for him (And it's usually a good idea to defer to Varric).

I dunno...even if she did something really bad, it's hard to justify execution by drowning (Not saying she should be all racist, of course).

Magdalene's got a pretty good grasp of Qunlat.  She tried to learn it well so she good communicate with her Mage father better.

*waggles right back*

I'm not sure if I want to break canon (If you could call an outfit change a "break"), but I do want a scene of her trying on a fancy ballgown that Vivienne had made for her, with her hair and make-up done all nice, and then Sera walks in and is completely floored and gives a quiet, stunned "Sh*t", but Mags here's her and is like "Does it really look that bad?" and then Sera has to back peddle and explain what she meant.

"Crap, I'll just make 'em spiders.  Everybody hates spider"

Have you heard any banter between Sera and Vivienne?  I have a vignette related to one but I don't want to spoil it.

If you romance Sera, she eventually gives you a nickname.  It always starts as Inky, but if you ask her about it she'll change it to one of a few different options.  I got Teetness and it's perfect!

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-21 04:04:45 +0000 UTC]

I made him "spirit" and y'know what, while I was originally all for the human thing, his spirit side is pretty awesome. (They say he talks in monotone but I'm really not hearing it.)

Not saying it was justified; saying she caused it. Riling up a bunch of people bigger than you is usually not a good idea by default, but when your beef is their very race and they happen to have a beef with your race, too?

. . .Let's just say Tallyn was stubborn but stupid when she was younger.

Oh, another note I forgot to mention: Tallyn doesn't know she's part spirit. Not until after the Fade thingy (in which I took Cassandra, Cole and Solas with), cause during the event, at one point I have Cole look at her funny and tell her that she "fits" there. After they get back and things get settled, she asks Cole what he meant by that. I don't have it written out yet, but the ultimate result is that she starts to recall things she shouldn't be able to recall, including having two separate sets of memories (one for the baby, one for the wisp). It actually terrifies her at first and she spends days in her quarters, thinking on it and trying to figure things out.

Eventually her friends get worried about the fact that she hasn't come back down (cause she's extremely high-energy and "do-the-thing"-minded, so she's always going places and talking to people and traveling, so hiding out for several days is way unlike her) and decide to check on her. Since Solas is in a relationship with her, he goes ahead and visits, and that's when she tells him about her.

I also have an alternate version of this in which she's fully aware that she's part spirit, never forgot it or whathaveyou, but she chooses not to tell anyone. With Solas, she considered telling him after discovering he's all for spirits, but that got waylaid when he started macking on her. At that point the last thing she wanted was to sway his opinion of her because of her "spirit" part, so she kept it to herself. She's kind of scared that he'll like her for what she is instead of who she is, see.

"Why is it always spiders?" - Hawke

I've seen some of their banter, yes, but as I'm usually the rogue and I usually take up two party slots for mages, that pairing doesn't happen often. I do know that Vivienne and Sera are at odds and Vivienne is a total snob, though. (I actually don't like her. But I do love how Solas lays the smackdown on her in their banter.)

That's good to know. I have something to look forward to. ;D

Oh!  Figured out why I usually prefer the mixed race couples, because they're less "obvious".  Love me some unexpected ships.

I have things like that to, where I have two different versions of events and I can't decide which I like better.

Remember before the game came out, and nobody wanted to romance Solas, and then it came out and everybody was romancing Solas?

Didja here the one about the snake?  I don't agree with her views on mages at all, but I do like Vivienne.  I don't think there's been a companion that I actively dislike.  Except for Sebastian.

One last thing about Magdalene.  She hasn't been called beautiful a lot in her life (What with being a Qunari in a land of humans and all), so it means a lot when Sera comments on her looks.  Sera is compelety flabbergasted by this.

Did you want ot here about anybody else?  'Cause I've got me some stories.

Unexpected ships are the best ships. Until they sink, anyway. #analogies

I actually purposely saw nothing of the game before release and then waited a long while before buying the game. I wanted to come into it with as little knowledge as possible, see, cause that pleases me most when new things happen. And I was pleased. I can say, however, that after initially meeting Solas, I wasn't so interested in him. It wasn't until after I'd begun a Cullen romance that Solas got really intriguing and by then I was stuck. My solution? New game.

Also, hear*. You keep using "here".

I do not recall a snake convo. Yet. I have a lot more party snippets to uncover as of yet. But yes I do dislike Vivienne. I didn't dislike Sebastian much, though I did find him irritating sometimes.

D'aaww. Reminds me of in my Cass/Adaar romance, after they officially bang, she confesses that she was afraid of him from the very beginning. And my big, bad Qunari, at hearing that, would totally have tried to make himself seem smaller. He absolutely loves women, to the point where he takes great pains to avoid frightening them (but if they're an enemy, they're still gonna die XD). Hearing that Cassandra, all tough as nails, was scared of him would totally make him wilt inside. He adores her.

Hmm, now that I've heard about Magdalene, how about Nowyn? Also, if you would, I'd like to get the link to your Inquisitors again. I want to take another look at them. In the meantime I'll brainstorm about my other characters a bit. (I spent so much time on Tallyn's story that I don't have much for the others. )

kamikamiya In reply to DragonsLover1 [2015-04-22 20:00:49 +0000 UTC]

I tried to do that, but I was still spoiled on a few things.

Magdalene worries about that too, it's why she tries extra hard to be nice and befriend everyone.  Also why she bonded with Cole, she knows what it's like to be feared for being different (Turns out I had one more thing!).

Here you go kamikamiya.tumblr.com/tagged/k… .  I've actually made all my Inquisitor's in the Creator, but I won't post them until I have good shots of them in the game.

So Nowyn was born in a different clan than Lavellan.  When she was twelve her sister Rhona was born, but shortly after their parents died.  Then her mage powers surfaced (It was a busy year).  Since her clan had enough mages already, and the Lavellan clan didn't have any, she was to be moved their and trained as the Keeper's first.  She begged to be allowed to take her sister with her, since she was the only family Nowyn had left, and they conceded.  During her time with Clan Lavellan she was queit, studious, and mostly kept to herself (Save for the Keeper and her sister.  She also became pretty good friends with Falonmar, my male Dalish  Inquisitor).  Acting as both the Keeper's First and a surrogate mother to her sister made Nowyn grow up fast.  She also learned about City elves and what they had to go through.  Eventually she became appalled at (most,  or maybe some, I'm not sure of the percentage) Dalish elves attitude toward them.  They didn't care about their suffering just because they've partially assimilated with the humans.  That shouldn't matter, they're still people.  It was during this period of doubt (When she's 28) that the Keeper sends her to the Conclave and boom, Inquisitor.

Personality wise, she's mature, calm, and doesn't suffer fools.  If you want to imagine speaking, just take the snarkiest in-game dialogue, and then add all of the deadpan.  She was a bit nervous being around so many humans, but she realized pretty quickly they were good people and could be trusted.  She doesn't try and argue religion around anybody (It took her a while to convince Sera that she really doesn't care how "elfy" she is), but don't you dare look down on her for believing in the Elven pantheon (See: Sera and her after the Temple of Mythal).

I romanced Cullen with her, and she gave him equal amounts of support and playful teasing (Oh when her and Mia meet in person).  They shall eventually go on to have two lovely daughters.

I have some stuff about Rhona, but I'll wait 'till the next comment because it's a lot of stuff about Rhona.  Maybe I'll think of some more little stuff about Nowyn by then.

DragonsLover1 In reply to kamikamiya [2015-04-23 17:12:57 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. Well, one other thing about Tallyn: I'm considering making her immortal (thanks to the spirit) and around 80 years old. In this version she knows about the spirit and has actually been apart from her clan for the last 15 years, though she keeps in contact with Istamaethoriel (to whom Tallyn was actually an elder sister figure in their youth). So while Tallyn WAS a Lavellan, and she still identifies as such, she's not officially part of the clan anymore. (This also explains why she had so many huge, crazy adventures -- she had decades between each one.)

As one more added detail, she would've actually been considered like a level 40 character by that point, but her trip through the Fade and the appearance of the mark greatly sapped her strength, which sort of reverted her back to level 1. She still knows all the things she can do (the dual-wielding and subterfuge trees, plus the Assassin specialization), but she doesn't have the speed, strength or coordination to pull them off -- yet. . . ;D It's actually very frustrating for her.

For Arishok, Hexya and Vexya, I don't have a family history set up for them yet. Obviously their parents left the Qun, voluntarily, and probably when Arishok was a baby. Could be they tried to take the little baby and stick him in one of the communal schools but his parents weren't down for that. I do, however, have it planned that his parents joined a mercenary band and were killed during some event or another when the twins were about three years old (Arishok was eight), leaving him to raise and protect his sisters. They came into their magic four years later, when he was twelve, and would've been kicked out of the group if not for Arishok. Even at twelve he was a force to be reckoned with (I like to think he's bigger than most Qunari) and he basically said, "You want to kick out my sisters, you lose ME." And they didn't want to lose Arishok. So they let the girls stay, and maybe they had another mage in the group who helped them learn their magic -- point is, eventually the girls became as invaluable as their brother.

Note that none of the three of them have any particular beliefs, mainly because no one in their mercenary group had any particular beliefs either. They just weren't exposed to much religion. Through Sera, Vex actually starts to be a little Andrastian, taking some faith from her.

On that subject, I should also mention that as the Inquisitor, my character Evelyn (the albino mage) is very, VERY religious and wholeheartedly buys into the whole "Herald of Andraste" thing. She absolutely wears it with pride and honor, considers the Anchor to be divine in origin and. . .is utterly shattered when it turns out she got it by chance from an Elvhen device. Poor girl.

I was wondering where she got the skills to kill an entire clan of blood mages.  It's funny, I haven't thought that much about the skill levels of my characters (Except for Saemus and his bow after I saw this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEG-ly… )

Magdalene goes through an arc of "Why would Andraste choose a Qunari?", "Maybe I am the Herald of Andraste" , "Oh no, I wasn't chosen at all", to "Just because Andraste wasn't involved directly doesn't mean this wasn't the will of the Maker."  Mother Giselle helped her a lot through this.

So yeah, Rhona, Nowyn's 16 year old sister.  Rhona's one of those "Dalish pride, all Shemlen suck, city elves are flat-ears" types, and also not that mature, but loves her sister a lot and is usually sweet to her.   I have this story with her set a bit after Corypheus is defeated, when she comes to Skyhold.  Nowyn introduces her to Cullen and she's all "Sister, why is this Shem acting so friendly with you?"  Then she finds out Nowyn and him are engaged, and doesn't want to believe it.  She spends the next few weeks hurling petty insults at Cullen and getting into arguments and annoying EVERY one of the companions in some way (Especially Sera.  Oh lord especially Sera) (Yeah she's kind of a brat).  During that time, Nowyn finds out she's pregnant, and Rhona accidentally overhears her talking about it.  That's when things really go bad.  Rhona gets really upset because Nowyn already left the clan and she's afraid she'll forget all about her, says some really harsh things and runs off into somewhere dangerous and ends up getting injured.  Nowyn finds her, and reassures her that the Dalish and her will always be a part of her and her kid’s lives, and there’s a lot of and tears making up.

On a lighter note I imagine a scene of Rhona and Sera having a huge argument in the Tavern and Nowyn walking in

Nowyn: “G to your room!”

Rhona runs out to do so

Nowyn: “I said go to your room”

Sera does as well.

Also, Rhona has a huge crush on Falonmar, but neither him nor Nowyn have the heart to tell her it’s never going to happen.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on shipping race-gating characters with races they can’t be romanced by.  Hypothetically speaking.

Well, that and experience tells me it's totally possible. I've played a lot of rogues in a lot of games and let me just tell you to NEVER underestimate the hidden rogue. I played one game which gave you insta-kills on any humanoid enemy that is unaware of your presence. The move changed on different enemies but ultimately every enemy had its throat slit -- a silent kill. This is what Tallyn did.

Also that Lars Anderson guy is a fucking idiot. An awesome trick-shooter, yes, but an idiot. See here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDbqz_…

That's cute. Regarding Cullen, I am shipping him with my Evelyn so hard right now. I'm even working on a fic to expand upon an idea I had: that Evelyn, being so sickly, has done a great deal of research into magical and alchemical healing. Thus, she's developed a technique (still in testing) that can remove toxins from the body without having the person drink something, bathe in something, or be cut -- it does no damage whatsoever and is relatively fast and effective. She offers to use it on Cullen, to get the last bits of lyrium out of his blood.

In short, she mixes up this solution which is mostly water but also contains a mixture of herbs designed to "grab" toxins (kinda like what soap does to grease). Then she "picks it up" using magic (she picks up small amounts at a time and needs a LOT of the solution to do this), then guides it through the person's skin at a slow pace. The liquid goes in, picking up on anything foreign or harmful along the way, and then she pulls it back out and deposits it into another container. (She can also use this on unknown poisons and such to get a sample of it.)

After she's done this throughout the person's body, they should be completely cleansed of the toxin. After doing it for Cullen, he feels monumentally better, since the lingering lyrium in his body is no longer harming him or manipulating his needs.

It would help my understanding of what you meant if you explained "race-gating". I'm assuming that means races that you can't play as?

In DA2, I heard talk about how you could use the Assassin tree to gain the ability to instakill anything, even the Arishok.

Oof, shows what I know.

Sadly, Nowyn doesn't posses that kind of skill (Though if you want some Necromancy done, she can really Necromance), so the help she can give Cullen is emotional.  She reassures him that he's strong and she believes in him, and that his past doesn't matter to her, and she's with him when the nightmares get too bad.

I'm not sure about the specifics of her "companion quest" (Probably something to do with the Lavellan clan War Table operation business), but I do know it'd be the same as Falonmar's.  It'd involve the Inquisitor and a companion (Or adviser, so I could have Cullen there), meeting up with the non-Inquisitor for that playthrough elf and Rhona and going on some small quest.  Rhona would take an immediate disliking toward the companion, but the other elf would be alright.  Some dialogue!

Companion: "Do you really trust me?"
Falonmar/Nowyn: "No, but I trust Nowyn/Falomar."

If the companion is Cullen/Dorian
Falonmar/Nowyn: "Oh he's handsome"
Nowyn/Falonmar: "*chuckles*, shut up."

And then this line no matter if Nowyn is the Inquisitor or not
Companion: "So you an Falonmar are friends"
Nowyn: "Of course.  He makes me seem like the fun one"

"Race-gated" characters are characters who can only be romanced by certain races (So...just Solas and Cullen I guess).  Sorry, I thought the term was more widely spread.

I know the move of which you speak and it only insta-kills most enemies. Stronger enemies merely lose half their health. Then again, if you can crit with it. . .hmm. I am replaying DA2 at present, maybe I will test this theory (me vs Arishok is always a difficult fight for me).

I didn't like the specializations in DAI much. Just in general. I mean I still really love the Assassin tree (by far my favorite tree in every game), but altogether they all seem to really suck. But maybe that's me. Thinking for Evelyn I may as well just ignore the specializations altogether; none of them really fit her.

(Side note: I found that playing a full party of mages is fucking amazing. You have a constant stream of barriers on at all times and the enemies are just decimated. I wouldn't recommend this whilst fighting dragons, however. Mages are still squishy.)

So are you working on a comic related to this companion quest? Cause it seems like a fun idea. I have a plethora of side-stories and dialogue expansions, but I hadn't considered a custom companion quest for the Inquisitor. I suppose for Tallyn I could have her take her favorite person *coughSolascough* to her home village from before she joined the Dalish? The settlement would be teeming by then. . .but no, that's all the way up in the Free Marches, near the border to Rivain. Hmm. Will have to think on this. (On that note, were you ever baffled as to how you have this entire country and it's implied that it takes mere minutes to travel from Skyhold to literally anywhere else? Cause I'm pretty sure that "little trip" with Solas to Crestwood should have taken several days, at least.)

The only thing that has ever really bothered me about the romance in DA2 and DAI is that the romance is never initiated by the companion. It worked that way in DAO, if you got enough approval, that the companion would just be like, "Hey, know what? I wanna shag you." And that implied more personality and AI in the characters than they've allowed for the sequels. If you don't actively choose the flirting options, your companion never shows you any interest, despite being the race/gender they prefer.

Tempest is good if you need some fire damage to murder a dragon (Who has yet to be murdered *shakes fist at sky*), and Necromancer has some cool buffs.  But yeah, they don't effect the gameplay much, but I do like how they give your character's fighting style a bit more uniqueness (For story purposes).  Right now, my team is Saemus the Archer (More on him in a sec), Iron Bull, Cassandra, and Vivienne, and I feel pretty unstoppable.

Ha ha, not yet (I'm mostly worried about my art, especially for the actual DA characters.  But I know I'll get better if I practice), I just think they're fun to think about (What got me was the field trip with Cole if you make him human.  The Quiz is like "Why don't we take a walk?" and boom, they're in Val Rpyeux).

At least you don't have to worry about losing approval if you reject them.  Wait, so are you against shipping your characters of a race with characters who normally can't be romanced by that race?  Hypothetically speaking.

Now for the prologue to Saemus Trevalyn (I'm currently playing him so I've got thoughts.  Lots of thoughts).  His father was a Free Marcher noble and his mother was a deeply Andrastian Rivaini peasant who he met somehow (They're one of the few noble couples who married for love).  They wound up having a son (Whom I call Maxwell and who is a jerk), then two twin sons, then Saemus and his twin sister Darcy (Who is the Inquisitor in another life).  His older brothers picked on him a lot, but he was best friends with his sister.  That is, until they were about ten and they found out Darcy was a mage.  Saemus promised not to tell anyone, but Maxwell blabbed to their parents and Darcy was shipped off to the Circle.  The family pretty much disowned her after that, never speaking of her and getting rid of all traces of her.  Saemus hated that but he never grew the courage to confront them on it.

So Saemus grows up, realizes "Hey, I'm into dudes," and while he doesn't have to worry about arranged marriages, having three older brothers to pop out heirs, those brothers were also big alpha male, dumb jock, dude bros, so he didn't feel comfortable coming out.  I think at some point during his teens his mother caught him kissing another noble's son, got upset with him, and told him to never speak of it (She was afraid of a scandal).

Since the Trevalyn's were way into the Chantry, Saemus got some less then subtle urgings to join the Templar's or serve as a Brother to the Chantry, but he always found some excuse not to.  So after years of being a sheltered, idle noble, his family finally goes "No, you are going to do something productive with your life" and send him to the Conclave.  You can guess what happens next (There's also the brief meeting with his sister that I mentioned before, but he forgets that until he goes into the Fade at Adamant, but more on that later).

Personality wise, he starts out unsure of himself and in a constant state of "Wait, what?  You're making me leader?  Don't do that!  That's a really bad idea!  Oh Maker why me..." that he only occasionally remembers to hide behind a mask of fake bravado, but he gains confidence over time.  Worries about things a lot.  Picks the snarky dialogue options.  Is definetly from a privileged upbringing, but that also means he knows firsthand how much nobles suck.  Sorry, I have a really clear idea of what his personality is, but I'm having trouble putting it into words.  Also, I can't decide if I want his father to be dead or not.  Like, I don;t want him to be dead, but I can't think of anything for him to contribute to the narrative.

Next time on Chynna rambles about her OC's: Saemus's Companion quest and his relationship with Iron Bull

Speaking of dragons, I found rogues pretty useless against them. I mean my Tallyn could do as much damage as a mage without being half as squishy, but the mages generally avoided all damage anyway while I had to keep right on the dragon's ass and do a shitton of pausing to move characters and then get back to Tallyn before she got flattened by a kick or swipe. (Also discovered that at level 22 [post-game at this point] killing dragons is hella easy. Just wish I had a Solas there with me; he had awesome gear and better spell selection than the others.)

Side note: that trip to Val Royeaux still happens if Cole goes spirit. It's funnier.

Hmm. You make me think of things. First off: no, I'm not against shipping against the race/gender preferred by NPCs, it just rarely occurs to me and I do prefer to stick to canon most of the time. Like the one thing I never fuck with is character personalities. I would LOVE to have Dorian, post-Tallyn-game, be all like, "Know what? Solas doesn't know what he gave up. I know I'm gay but I totes wanna bang you anyway." Cause love. (In my head these two absolutely love each other, like siblings with the worst naughty jokes imaginable.)

It occurs to me, though, that I very rarely go out of my way to make characters gay. Ultimately you have the four straight NPCs, two bi NPCs and two gay NPCs, so you could easily round this out to four straight, four gay. Yet I only pursued gay relationships with the gay NPCs. I suppose I could swap Josephine and Bull's lovers, but I'm really liking my Bull/Vex pairing. (Partly cause I'm pretty sure Bull has to restrain himself in all lovemaking cause of his size and strength and all, so only another Qunari is really equipped to handle him, plus Vex has magicks she can use to drive him crazy. *waggly brows*)

(I may or may not have made it a thing that if/when Solas and Tallyn bang, he's gonna use magic to give her electric thrills and she's gonna freaking love it.)

For the most part I don't generally make backstories for my characters until I'm actively playing them, and most of my Inquisition PCs right now are still in the prologue cause I just made them, saved them and left it at that. They tend to get more fleshed out as I play them and interact with the NPCs. So far my male Trevelyan, Jarrell, was just a promising Templar recruit who abandoned the Chantry to save his cousin (since she would've been easy prey, both for people and demons, due to her albinoism). Aside from Tallyn herself (and my Adaar siblings) I haven't put any thought towards family relations for my characters.

May have to make a list. . .

Random side note: in playing DA2 again, I think I finally came up with a character name and appearance I like besides the default one. Wanted to get an opinion on this one: what do you think of "Rhea" Hawke for a female mage? (Her appearance is orange hair darker than Aveline's, green eyes, freckles and dark makeup. Not that it's super important.)

At least with Qunari, you get some extra physical defense, so you don't have to worry that much about being up a Dragons butt.  And Tempest gives you fire damage.

Soooo you wouldn't think it silly if some non specific person shipped a Cadash with Solas?  Hypothetically speaking.

I was the opposite, I did same-sex pairings for the two bisexual npc's (But I don't think you're obligated two, keep the pairings you like!).  Actually four of my Inquisitor's are gay, two are bi, and only one's straight.

That's a lovely name!  I wound up using Marin for three different Inquisitors (My fave and two others), so maybe I should come up with unique names for them.  I also have Nicholas and Olivia.  Side note to your side note, I actually prefer the Inquisition's hairstyles for my non-default face Hawke's.  They're just more interesting looking to me.

Hope you don't mind more rambling on Saemus (Self deprecating!  He has a lot of self-deprecating humor!  Which graduates to Dorian style self complimenting humor as time goes on!  Thought of a thing).

When he firsts meets Bull, he's INCREDIBLY ATTRACTED to him but doesn't feel confidant enough to express it openly so he just becomes a blushing awkward mess who tries to act cool but fails (This hides nothing from anyone).  Though as time goes on, they become actual friends.  Saemus is really inquisitive about Qunari culture, since his Rivaini mother had firsthand experience and told him stories about them (Though Saemus quickly learned that his mother was crazy about most things (They weren't nice stories), so he should get some actual information).  Before Adamant, Bull's companion quest happens, and Saemus reassures him that he's a good man, and doesn't need the Qun to keep him that way (Because seriously, he's an extremely smart spy who's also calm and rational even when arguing with viewpoints that oppose his own.  How is he not the sanest person here?)  They subsequently hook up, and Saemus is delighted (and giggly).

So then the fade portion of Adamant happens, and when Saemus gets his memories of the explosion back, he also gets the memory of meeting his sister for a moment right before he runs off to save the Divine, and this really shakes him up (He doesn't even care that the Mark wasn't from Andraste).  This leads to his companion quest afterwards, where him and a companion have to sneak into his room at his family's place to retrieve a mysterious package hidden under the floorboards.  They arrive back at Skyhold, and the package turns out to be a portrait of him and his sister painted when they were kids that he had hidden away (The family burned the others with her after they found out she was a mage).  This confirms that, yeah, it really was his sister at the Conclave, which gets him to thinking about how much he hated that his family pretended llike she never existed, and maybe it would have been better if she was the Inquisitor instead, since she had actual life experience and stakes in the conflict.  Then the companion reassures him that he's been doing a fine job, and his sister would be proud and that he can make sure things are better for mages like her.

His best friend his Dorian, they have similar life experiences with their families, and make snarky jokes about them and the rest of the nobles and make self complimenting comments (Saemus wishes he could be half as cool as Dorian).  During Dorian's companion quest, when Saemus finds out what caused the divide between him and his family, it's the first time he gets really angry, and gives Halward what for.  But he still encourages Dorian to make peace, because at least his father is reaching out, which is more than some people get.
