Description How do you measure time?
Does it ebb and flow?
Race like the wind?
Surround and embrace?
Drown?

Do you measure time by
         the ticks on a clock's face;
         by words, weeks and numbers;
         appointments, achievements, and accolades?

Do you measure with moments past
          white lace and roses;
          wine and song;
          pain and the joy of new life;
          sticky kisses and lines on the wall?

Do you measure time by the reflection in the mirror?
           age encroaching on youth;
           graying hair;
           invading lines;
           ignoring the wisdom, and focusing on the loss?

Does time rush by in a fury?
            endless days behind a desk;
            toil pressed between the earth and the sky;
            healing the sick;
            teaching the young?
No time for yesterday, only striving for today.

Do you remember?
Do you savor it slowly?
Does it slip through your fingers like grains of sand?

Do you measure time in soft solitude?
              quiet, but for your mind and your breath;
              finding more than peace, but finding you…your essence,
              discovering all you were meant to be, all you were meant to fulfill?

Do you measure time in goodbyes?
             arms gripping necks tightly
             tears slipping freely
             promises whispered
             encouraging smiles, with broken hearts?

Or do you measure by the final farewell?
It all stops then…
             the last kiss;
             a weak wrist pressed to your cheek;
             hands clutching;
             and eyes no longer seeing.
Do you measure here quickly before it mercilessly presses forward?

Are you one that leaves time in disregard?
            living full and fierce
            to the fullest and to the last
            because you know…you know time is finite.

I measure time with moments and memories,
I measure with tiny hands, loving embraces, and angry faces.
I measure with faith for a better tomorrow…

I measure in
tears
scraped knees
betrayal
broken hearts
stolen moments
pay checks
friendship
love
laughter
desire
fear
and hope.
all of the above
and
more.

Thank you!!
I am rather fond of this one myself.
I think I am going to like it more, the older I get.

No problem! And I can definitely see that. It rings true on all sorts of levels, and I guess you can appreciate more of what it has to say the more you've experienced.

I would like to add to the consensus of 'epic,' if I may.
Wonderful job with this. So many words, yet it comes off as concise. Wonderful, wonderful.

Oh! Thanks, so much.
Epic is a scary word. I wrote this driven by some internal examination.
I appreciate your comment.

You're quite welcome. I think the best kind of pieces come about that way.

sometimes...

My latest writing (decidedly not my best, mind you) came from deep need. Just saying.

But of course. Two sides of the same coin in my experience.

Humm...I have to think about that one. And...I find myself not really agreeing with you, in terms of me. Nicely...I "won't agree" in a polite, civilize way (you baffoon...kidding...I probably can't even spell baffoon correctly, lol).

My latest poem was written in exactly 3 minutes. I was just sitting at the computer thinking about...things...while I checked my e-mail and it just wrote itself. I think it happens that way sometimes, without deep internal examination, because feelings are so close to the surface and don't need to be unearthed, so to speak.

Or...I could just be a really weird person...

Poetry is a strange creature, and I feel there are more parts to the puzzle than you realize. Granted, I could, and most probably am, wrong, but I've always felt that good poetry does not necessarily just come about. Inspiration may strike, but the feelings displayed in a poem are usually what lingers about in the system long before and afterward.

You aren't wrong! Don't say that. Each of us is different...we write for different reasons and from different places. And you are correct in saying poetry is a puzzle...much like life.
I told pyrrhite once that some people don't "get" her poetry because she is such a great word-smith. She builds layer upon layer into her poetry and it is beautiful...but it is deep...mysterious. I told her, I just spoonfeed people. I think you are more like her. And that is a great thing.

As for what you say about lingering in the system...egads...I don't want anyone lingering in anything from my latest. Some of my other pieces...they are more philosophical I find. Which is safe. We all have our own personal philosphies and most people are polite enough not to give you the finger (middle one) to your face. They just nod and back away slowlyyyyyy...

This is fantastic! I immediately knew how I measure time... from the first time I saw her, healthy and vibrant and beautiful; to that last longing look, when she was thin and sick and weak... before and after, time is meaningless. Excellent writing, anyway!

I have no idea what made me write this piece. I don't remember my mood, or if something was going on at the time. But I do remember it was a very short write. About an hour. One of my friends said something about "epic" and in the sense that it spans very different times, that I suppose is true.
I appreciate you liking it and commenting.

sort of epic...you got an awful lot of the human experience in here.

wow...epic huh? Not sure that has ever been referenced to me or anything related to me. Ever.
I believe I am humbled and would like to kiss your cheek now. the one above your chin, btw

and btw, isn't it sad that in essence it is "an awful lot" much of the time.

Heh. I can't believe you and epic haven't joined forces before this.
And an 'awful' lot, yes so it is, too often the case.
