Steel Nation Tournament - Final Stage

Late once again--sorry for the extremely long delay... Too many things were going on that slowed down my work flow.

Well, as promised, I have created an epic piece for all of you to enjoy. Hopefully, this is epic enough, heheh.

If you see an infrequency in the line quality, that is because I drew some panels on the computer, before and after my trip, and the rest were done on paper during my trip.

Continuing the tradition of ~The-Russian-Gestapo , here links to some epic music to make this entry more epic:
- "Dance of Curse " by Yoko Kanno (Just replace "Es-ca-flow-ne!" in the lyrics with "Shi-ning-PSE-UDO!")
- "Mr. Adam " by Kota Hoshino (For the epic battle scenes towards the end)

I wish I could have cameoed everyone, but I tried my best to cameo as much characters as I could.

Side notes:

- A fight in the Dire Marshes --heheh, "dire..." I was interested in making the battle being fought on air, under water, and on land--making use of all the mech's modes.

- The MTX Center has many buildings--big and small!

- I apologize for this story jumps around a lot when it comes to settings. Basically, Santris' infected minions raid the entire MTX Center. It's basically everyone for themselves and some have allied with each other to defeat the common threat. In the fray involving the USB, DeathAngel, and BIA models, Ralph is in the USB with Clyde (most likely escaped after their life-threatening run-in with Dr. Grenner) and Gyrode is piloting the DeathAngel. Towards the end, Tai and Dee, as well as some others who rely on communicating to their mechs, are in a transport helicopter flying over MTX. Unfortunately, I didn't draw panels illustrating this--as well as other things I wished had better clarification.

- I'm not exactly sure how Mr Rudolph Renaldo resurrected his Fantastic Fight Machine. I assume that Thor had the back-up plans and Tai's crew rebuilt it from the ground up, also finding a fix to alleviate the massive combustion problem.

- This must be some kind of Russian party!

- Dark PSEUDO uses the Force (of Gravity) to defeat those annoying BIA units. Conceptually, the PSEUDO creates mini black holes and anti-black holes to both implode and explode the interior of the enemy--ripping them to shreds. However, this is physically not possible, because we all know that gravity is dependent on mass, and black holes are extremely massive, despite their tiny size. Now, due to the conservation of mass, mass cannot be created nor destroyed--therefore, PSEUDO can't make black holes, even if it tries to manipulate the mass of the objects inside the enemy; all that mass has to come from somewhere. So how does this work? Maybe the PSEUDO takes pieces from existing black holes somehow, but we would never know...

- Why is Joan crying? Well, maybe because it's over, or because the PSEUDO could have used the Force killed her, or the fact that she sacrificed her victory to ensure that her friends were safe. It could be a combination of all these things.

- The ending is a little mysterious. I wanted to go with a cliff hangar, 'cuz that's how I roll, heheh.

- Yes, that is a giant mutated fish--the one from ~Asgar19 's extra comic. Dr. Grenner must have forgotten about that little experiment. Primarily, the fish had traveled from the City Ruins to the Dire Marshes, where it mutated. Afterwards, it was awakened by the battle, and following the combatants to the MTX Center.

- Who will join the battle to save the Earth from utter chaos? Maybe a super-modified version of Gregory ?! It is a mystery...

Hmm... that shadowy sponsor seems... awfully familliar, what with his floating fortress and his cup of coffee...

I wonder who he is...?

I know, right? I mean, Caster didn't even show up once in this entry... Who knows, it is a mystery...

Actually, I intended that cup to be a cup of tea--but it might as well be coffee, the trademark drink of the tournament.

Heheh, I guess it'll be up to the contestants to decide that. My guess would be tea... green tea... or coffee, again, heheh.

this. was. amazing.

seriously, i loved the whole chaotic "every man for himself" vibe this gives off, you can really feel the tension and excitement. and its definitely the little things here that make this. tiny little touches that really add to the overall whole. unfortunatly the whole thing feels unfinished and there is no real closure. i wonder if the Steel Nation saga will ever really finish. ha ha.

my extreme thanks for those few panels you dedicated to my characters...i think that panel with my mech is possibly one of the best representations of my mech from the entire tournament...i really wanted to do a "smashing through the wall" scene!!

epic: yes. spectacular? definitely. enough to win...i fear not, but we shall see. you still gave us a fantastic finale and i sincerely thank you for it from the bottom of my mecha-lovin heart!

DRa90NBoi In reply to DarkeAngel [2008-08-23 01:29:34 +0000 UTC]

Yea, I feel it is unfinished as well, but I'm just glad I finished this much. So it's done, just not entirely complete. I would have added color and some extra panels, but it have taken too long. Story-wise, I wanted the cliffhanger, so I didn't do much to change that aspect. I wanted to leave an opening for others to build upon if they so choose.

No prob. I enjoyed drawing your characters, though I wish I could have done more with them to help solidify their background stories. I'm glad you liked their cameo appearances.

I was aiming for epic. Whether or not I win, I wouldn't mind either way. I definitely had a great experience in this tournament, and a loss or victory would not change that.

It would be, heheh. You have to have been there from the beginning to get it, I guess. If you go back and read all the canon entries, though overwhelming, it will give you all the info you need. I'm glad it was interesting, but I apologize for it confusing you at the same time...

holy shit...
that was awesome...
and cameos abound to no end indeed...XD
only one's I can think of that could've been there were the "dino-bot" one and lalalama's one.... and I think that's about it lol XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DRa90NBoi In reply to Guncannon [2008-08-21 06:32:34 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I don't remember a "Dino-Bot", unless you mean ~Sebbythefreak 's mech. Trust me, I wanted to put every mech in there--but for some of them, I couldn't because they were killed off beyond repair in the story line, and for others, I couldn't fit them in or totally overlooked. The ones I intentionally left out were these and for the following reasons:

- ~lalallama 's "NIMBUS 4 ": Danny, one of the pilots of the mech, dies .

- ~Hunter-Wolf 's "O.R.B. ": Susan, the mech's control support system was killed --she didn't seem replaceable...

- ~Degulus 's "Tremor and Siege ": Siege dies , though his essence was transferred into Tremor--I did not want to impede on a developing character.

- =meikahidenori 's "Little Red ": Quote, the mech's pilot is killed along with his mech.

~Red-Rook 's "BIA " (original), *balrogon 's "R3-BOUND ", and ~Sebbythefreak 's "PIMP's Robot " never made an appearance. BIA is in hiding, Caster has enough on his hands, and I have no idea what PIMP and CumRag are doing...

well that's not what it was called... just looked like one... sorta...

oh yeah... but isn't that still unconfirmed?

for the rest, well I meant ones that weren't dead or elsewhere, but yeah

bleh, anyways, you still made a whopping amount of cameos

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DRa90NBoi In reply to Guncannon [2008-08-21 06:57:43 +0000 UTC]

Tru, tru. I figured the mechs needed some panel time, even if it was for just one panel. This is a mech tournament after all, so I thought it would be nice to shocase most of them.

kitfox-crimson [2008-08-21 05:16:55 +0000 UTC]

ZOMG!!! No way!! Well yeah, the epicness was epic. I thought for a second you wouldn't have time to make this one uber, but I'm glad you did XD You certainly are the master of storyline tie-in's XD

I was also going to have my char lose the final battle but then I thought, how do you win if you lose?

I'm trying to think of a way that both our entries can exist, because it would be a shame to lose anything from the plot. Since they were both technically forfeits, we could say that they both happened one after the other. Maybe mine and then yours? I don't know.

But yes, suitably grandoise! I love the way you drew Vincent (and Chevka and the Russian gunships! Yay crossovers) very well done and imaculately researched! Damn!

Good luck in the round!

I was afraid it wasn't good enough--I don't it's the best, but everyone else seems to enjoy it, which is more than what I could ask for. I'm glad you liked it as well!

Yea, I didn't think I would get this far in the tourney, to be honest. But since I had, this was my personal reaction to it--make it good, but not intentionally winning it all the way. Plus, I had no idea how to end it with everything going on at once, so I left it a cliffhanger. And yea, it doesn't make sense if I win, 'cuz I'd lose either way, heheh.

It could work that way--or a mix of some events in each story can be canon, you know? Besides, if you take out all the major cameo sections, the fight between Joan and Vincent in this piece is relatively small compared to my other fights. Ther was just a quick air battle, a quick underwater brawl, then a chase, and finally the ending battle--which wasn't much either, heheh. I'm already analyzing my mistakes!

Hey, I had to cross the characters over--it's canon, so why not? While grouping all the Russians together, I over looked the fact that Chevka was watching the tournament, but ~The-Russian-Gestapo reminded me and I gave her a panel. I have to thank him for that.

I wish you good luck in this round as well!

WOAH. That's very full of many things. I believe the proper term is "Epic".

I love seeing all these stories I've been reading all clash, with all these various and interesting characters as well. This has been a heck of a tournament, and indeed it seems that, as the mysterious shadowed man says, "it is not yet over"...

The-Russian-Gestapo [2008-08-21 01:18:26 +0000 UTC]

I'm going to read this through again now. On first read: numerous cameos, drama, explosions, conflict, conflict resolution, that fish everybody had forgot about (so glad that became canon, btw), humour, more cameos, and the first "appearance" of the sponsor.

You know what? I could be here a while, reading this over and over.

Heheh--pretty much sums it up. Enjoy your time re-reading it. Hopefully it's not too confusing.

Having produced a lot of the clutter of spec entries that confuse people, I think it's safe to say that I'm one of the last people to be confused.

I'd hate to be one of the judges, honest. We have a classic final round showdown going on here...

PS. Re-read it, still love it, can't wait until tomorrow to discuss it with my girlfriend and friends.

I agree. It doesn't matter who wins--I'm just glad to be a part of such a project with an epic story about an epic tournament, heheh.

Though you got robot sizes very... Mellowed out. DeathAngel is still not even half as tall as Gigil, actually

DRa90NBoi In reply to TheTenk [2008-08-21 01:00:26 +0000 UTC]

Yea, it was really hard to stay technically accurate when it came to size, so I just when with what was more compositionally interesting instead--so you'd know who was who, etc. I wanted to keep everything as accurate as possible, but sometimes it is an impossibility to do so, especially with all the cramming into panels.

Thank you, epic was what I was shooting for!
