This is a perfect photo for a post HDR treatment.
In any case is still good.

Thanks for the tip - that's one area ( HDR ) I have never tried --- that
process seems to be rapidly evolving - with some in camera HDR effects
- and contained within different  photo editors - and stand alones .
Would imagine i would have to break out my tripod to take the 3-5
photos necessary ( I doubt that car is going anywhere soon  )
what makes you feel it would benefit from HDR - and what would you recommend
as some of the better HDR software - if - you don't mind me asking.
I use Photoshop Elements - not the full Photoshop proper - altough I could get it .
what about stand alones ? ---------------thanks !

Well, there are 3 modes for create an HDR:
1. Take at least three different exposure shots with your camera;
2. Create from a single image the same different exposure shots wiithin Photoshop or an other similar software;
3. Start from a single image only.
Usually I prefer the 2 or 3 solution.
Is possible create an HDR effects with Photoshop Elements like described here: www.tipsquirrel.com/photomerge…
There are many stand alone / plugin software, the best is the suite Nik Collection by Google recently became free: www.google.com/nikcollection/p…

Thanks - quite appreciated - I downloaded the free Nik collection to my Photoshop  Elements - ( there is a little box that is clearly visible - it's not hidden anywhere ) -- but the HDR effects was not compatible with it - so it didn't download ---but it is compatible with Lightroom - so I downloaded it there ( fine ) --- and it says it's there and enabled .
however ! I have no idea where to find it -  and how to make it run ------- maybe it needs 3 or more photos to be activated .
I have no idea ! ( Lightroom drives me crazy - while Photoshop seems so much more intuitive -maybe it's just me

I don't like Lightroom too, if you want know where are the installed the plugins you can see this video: helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/how-…
In any case is possible use HDR Efex Pro module as stand alone application.
An other good effect very similar to HDR is the "Tone Mapping" preset that you can found inside the Color Efex Pro plugin (Photoshop Elements compatible).

Thanks again - I saved a few pages that tell how to download HDR Efex Pro as a stand alone - will try that tomorrow .
but a friend of mine was kind enough to try some HDR effects on this photo - which still looked a little hard and
over-sharpened to my eyes ---so I kind of combined my rather drab version with the HDR version  - and so what
you see above is what I came up with -- the colour certainly has more impact ( darker anyway ) -  old version here Better Days Behind But Still Here By Douglashump --again thanks a lot for the information
I'll have to experiment with it for awhile to come up with something that doesn't have that original HDR look that
I didn't care for --- the best results would be that people don't immediately think HDR ! when they see it .

You are welcome Douglas.
The updated photo is better but still lack details in shadow for a proper HDR balance.
I have take your photo and process that in Photoshop just for understand the HDR concept.

I will delete the photo after your check of course.

Thank you so much Stefano ! -- Very kind of you to give me a visual of what you are talking about.
First of all - my reaction to your version --- it does show the details in the shadows - and the photo is more dynamic ( dramatic? )
the only fly in the ointment is for my eye to adjust to the vibrant colour of the Pontiac. - which is maybe TOO orange/red . But it sometimes takes
awhile to adjust to what I feel about this affect - though my reaction to the whole of your example is mostly positive !

~ Of course we are working with only one photo instead of the usual 3 or more exposures to get more of the HDR effect.
But I can see the value of experimenting with this process. --- Although one of the benefits of HDR is to bring out the normally
unseen details in the dark and light areas of a photo --- I have found that this isn't, to my eyes,  always a good thing - esp when taken too far - as many HDR entusiats seem to do ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ in my way of looking at
things . I generally like more subdued colour -- however ! -  my original posting of this Pontiac looked rather dull - I realize that now.

~ One thing I would like to say  ( which may be stating the obvious ) - is that a photograph is a VERY different thing  than the subject we
see before us with our eyes  . When we view a scene , I think our eyes actually scan around what we are looking at very quickly - since our sharp area of good focus is rather small - we actually - ( I would say ) --kind of crawl all over a scene - ( esp a landscape ) -------------- also - people have different ideas of what most closely approximates what would be thought of as a 'natural' rendering of a scene .

~ Some people swear that Ansel Adams ( straight photography ? )
is giving us the 'real deal' -- but of course his work was in black & white ( not true to the scene ) -- and he dodged and burned a lot of areas , etc.
So the end result was heavily 'manipulated '
When it came to colour 'film' photographs  - esp if one has been around awhile -- we started reflating to photos that seemed to be very natural
looking ( using neutral density filters , etc helped with the contrast when needed ) ------- then before digital started to make inroads --- Velvia slide  film
became very popular - as it punched up the colour . Then some landscape artists started using sing-ray polarizing filters - and every part of the
photo became saturated --------and I took an instant dislike to these results ( though they have the 'wow' factor - they get old quick for me ).

~ So then HDR comes along with the good intent of putting the detail back in the contrasts ( sounded so good on paper ) -- but most of the early
HDR photos - esp landscapes looked even more 'unatural' ( of course our eye switches quickly from shadow to highlight when we look at something before  us - and our brain translates it into something normal and natural -------- but HDR ( to me ) was a whole different kettle of fish ! ( I'm not sure how much our perceptions were affected ( pre - conditioned ) - by old fashioned colour photos -- but this new style was 'jarring' to me . Some scenes - in the hands of someone with a good feel for aesthetics --- can make HDR work well ( to my eye ) ---------- but there seems to be a market for regular HDR work - perhaps
among younger people who adapt to this new type of photography much more readily -( after all the idea today is to GRAB the viewers attention in the first few seconds - before they get bored and move on )- as for myself - I prefer things that grow on you - and will look just as good ten years from now  ---

~ Currently I'm somewhat caught somewhere  in-between - trying to readjust -- and as such
will progress conservatively with HDR ! ( besides I'm sure HDR software is adjusting all the time to give one more options for a more [pleasing  end result ).

~ Sorry !!! --  for the long winded summary -- but it gives you an approximate idea of how i see HDR . ....... I  look forward to experimenting
with it and  thank you again for your kind input ! ----cheers , douglas

I agree with you, in my opinion the HDR effect is a dangerous tool, in fact is possible make great images with a good light balance and details improving but also is very easy make bad unreal result, because is important for the artist to know when to stop the process.
Happy work Douglas.

GM's worst idea: a 5500lb car with a small V8 and stupidly high rear end gears (.219 to 1).  My Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser often tried to kill me on highways and mountain passes because it was so under-powered.  Twas a happy day when I saw that turd being towed out of my life.
