Description My first time inking a piece to completetion. Also my first time stippling. I do not recommend doing this on a time restraint. AT ALL.

Was drawn for a local contest about the War of 1812 but was disqualified for historical inaccuracy on his clothing and the pine trees. Lawlz. Too much artistic license? You decide.

Original pencil drawing here. >>> [link] As usual, I liked the pencils better than the inked version. Sort of sad that I had to erase this once the inks were on.

omg same thing happened to me! i hate it when the judges decide based on how close the piece relates to the theme rather than how good it is
great job though!

Oh boy I remember the wonderful art that is stippling... wait, no, it was wonderous results and painstaking work that I remember, time consuming too

All in all, great job, I like the detail on the clothing wrinkles though the shading seems much more stark on the pants, which might be intended on giving it a stretched look, but it sticks out a little from the rest

That bothered me too. To ease my mind I just tell myself the pants are stiffer and make harsher shadows.

Lovely! And stippling really is a pain in the wrist... I doubt I'll ever finish (or start) something that is stippled.
You're a great artist! ^^

Thanks very much!

Stippling is horribly time consuming... I've seen some mind-blowing work with it though. I think I'll fiddle with different ink techniques that don't require hand amputations. O.o

I think there's a project coming up in my art class that involves a lot of mark-making. I get the feeling stippling may pop into mind whenever we get around to it... I'm getting pretty interested in it. ^^

Give it a shot! It's a little tedious, but you might find you really like it.

Heh, today during my free period, I tried stippling my friend's hand. I couldn't get it right... do you sketch lightly in pencil before you put in the dots?

Doozigitis In reply to Emo-Lollipop [2009-09-15 16:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh absolutely. There was a tight pencil drawing beneath the inks that I erased. I also started with some roughs to get everything placed where I wanted it.

Here's the rough: [link]

And the final pencils:[link]

It felt crappy to erase the drawing once the inks were on top. I still like the pencil drawing more than the finished piece. Go figure.

I like them all. ^^
I'm really glad to hear other people would put pencil underneath, too. I wasn't sure if it would still be considered stippling, but now that I think of it, of course it would! Ha...
But, yeah, I got this idea in my head during history today... I want to draw some surrealism... and STIPPLE it. I dono why I'm so excited about that, but I think it may have to do with the fact that last year we did printmaking, and if we wanted, it could be surreal, and mine came out pretty well, so I'm all excited about the mark-making and the surrealism.

Too bad about the contest, but you still drew one absolutely amazing piece of artwork! This version must have taken you forever to do, so I commend you on your patience and skill! Fantastic work!

A little too long, IMO. I think I'm going to dink around with some other inking styles like dry brush or something. It's a little looser, quicker, and can give some really beautiful effects.

Love the inking, but I have to disagree on the pencil version being better; I like this one loads better. Looks so pro : D

I like this inked version! It's more finished than the pencils, although those are lovely too of course.

They probably looking for something concerning the fighting in Louisiana or Mississippi, but the clothes? I would imagine a mountain man would be pissed off at the British invading his homeland just as much as anyone!

No, it was a local battle they were looking for at the River Raisin. There was a massacre as well.

i've tried stippling once or twice, so yeah... i'm an AMAZED at how well you did this!

... you got disqualified for historical inaccuracy in PINE TREES? how big a pike did the judges have up their asses?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Doozigitis In reply to sylvacoer [2009-01-23 22:39:10 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, apparantly they were looking for a more swampy area. There's a particular area locally where a massacre took place and it was much swampier I guess. Locally, it's pretty flat but there's pine trees everywhere! I think it was most for his clothing, though. I took waaay too much liberty with it. Lesson learned!

Good news is, I may I have a potential buyer already. The director told me he wasn't only interested, but he WANTED it. I was totally floored cause I've never framed anything, much less put it on display.
