Grinch is evil at first and then into good guy at the end.
Once-ler is very innocent at first, then become greed in the middle, then regret at the end.
Once-ler is surely complex

I was going to say villians. in the books, the Grinch prior to stealing Christmas was a villian. He was Carrying hell in a box and throwing kid's into it [link] , and was Grinching the cat in the hat. [link]
The oncelr was alittle more misguided. yeah he learn't his lesson in the end.

and I didn't know the other tales exist of him ^ ^;

I didn't think of that about the Grinch, I think I was only more focused on the Christmas tale of him then the other 2
and when the 2000 movie version came out, it made the 2 different versions of the Christmas tales kinda intertwine
making him to me, yes a bit cruel, but more of a prankster or a cold heart-ed person * since he had more back-story
and a reason for his hate* until the end of the movie
