I believe this is a hibiscus too. (yes I read the other comments) I have several but none this color. Beautiful. Was it in a container. IĀ  think it would take a very hardy variety to survive your winters.

It is my neighbor's down the road from me. I have no idea where she got it from, but it comes up every year by her mailbox. I don't think she does anything special to protect it, so it has to be hardy to make it through our winters...haha. I think it's quite beautiful too

Hey, I know you're at work, I don't expect you to answer my comments right away ...and wow, so interesting. Being bi-polar or having some form of mental illness is common in artistic people I guess from what I've read.

I know you understand, I really had no idea if she had problems. I just just remembered that quote from my high school art class. I thought it was a funny at the time but now I realize it was a sign of her illness.
So I did some more reading, so many artists have such sad unhappy lives

Yes unfortunately a lot of artists/musicians have had sad or unhappy lives, I think that art and music work well as forms of therapy for some of them.
