Now I remember. Funny thing, due to my severe hatred of Asuka, I didn't care. But I mourned EVA Unit-02's death. I really hate Asuka. She's such an over-bitch. Rei & Misato are way better. Shinji should totally pick Rei. Don't care what ANYONE says. They are the best couple in EVA ever. Shinji/Misato works, too in my book.

Her cactus-like personality is actually a defensive mechanism caused by psychological trauma. There was an accident with Unit-02, afterwards Asuka’s mother didn’t recognize her as anything more than “that girl” and was calling a creepy handmade doll Asuka. Non of the hospital staff told her why she was behaving like this. And on the day Asuka was accepted as an Eva Pilot, her mom hanged herself and the doll. Her father was dating one of the hospital nurses before she even died. All this when she was FOUR. YEARS. OLD. Asuka had incorrectly thought that her mom saw something in her that made her totally incapable of being loved. And if she let others close to her they would find out about the “real her” they would not just leave, but they would run. So she keeps them at arms length to make sure that it doesn’t happen.
That’s why Asuka has such an abrasive personality. It’s could be described as being a symptom of PTSD. And of course, no one ever decided that she needs a therapist. Although she actually mellows out around people she can at least partially trust.
What actually happened was that Kyoko, unlike Yui, had her body recovered. However her soul was ripped out of her body, which was left with a faint, flawed impression of her soul in its place. The best way to describe it would be a moving car with the headlights on, a stone pressing down on the accelerator, at least to an extent, but the driver has long sense been yanked out, leaving the seat still warm from body heat. Unfortunately for everyone involved, it took five months for the inevitable “crash” to happen. If death is described as when the soul leaves the body, than Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu had been dead for nearly half a year.
