Just be patient with the program. Takes a while to learn what the programs can do. Also, keep your eyes open on artist's work that you enjoy. Try to figure out what they did to create what you like about it.

No. Those are vector pieces. Auto-traced from a scan of wrinkled paper, and made transparent over the entire piece in a vector-based program like Freehand MX or Illustrator.
