It was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university (the Khmer people now inhabit modern day Cambodia). It's one of many temple ruins at the Angkor sight (along with Angkor Wat, obviously!). The restoration on this one continues but the idea is to balance restoration while giving people an idea of what these temples looked like after they had been consumed by the jungle. It's a tricky business because the trees are slowly tearing the buildings apart.
