Description The Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the largest bird native to Australia and the only extant member of the genus Dromaius. It is the second-largest extant bird in the world by height, after its ratite relative, the ostrich. There are three subspecies of Emus in Australia. The Emu is common over most of mainland Australia, although it avoids heavily populated areas, dense forest, and arid areas.

The soft-feathered, brown, flightless birds reach up to 2 metres (6.6 ft) in height. They have long thin necks and legs. Emus can travel great distances at a fast, economical trot and, if necessary, can sprint at 70 km/h (43 mph) for some distance at a time.

They are opportunistically nomadic and may travel long distances to find food; they feed on a variety of plants and insects, but have been known to go for weeks without food. Emus ingest stones, glass shards and bits of metal to grind food in the digestive system. They drink infrequently, but take in copious fluids when the opportunity arises. Emus will sit in water and are also able to swim. They are curious birds who are known to follow and watch other animals and humans. Emus do not sleep continuously at night but in several short stints sitting down.

What equipment do you use? Im using a Nikon P900 and it takes a lot of shots to get just one photo that has decent clarity when zooming on the photo.

Well that depends. Emu shot was done with an old Canon 450D and Tamron 70-200/2.8 lenses. Right not I use Canon 7D MKI, although I very, very much would like to move to a full frame, but it's a matter of lack of funds. For wlidlife shoots I usually now use Sigma 150-600, sometimes Canon 100-400 when I need a lighter backpack.

Oh. I see.
You get great shots.
One more question... Do most of your photos turn out with such clarity, or do you still have to take multiple shots? (For the crisp/clear result).

I ask because i have to take a lot of shots bf i get that one good photo.

And keep up the great work.

DominikaAniola In reply to M-R-Martin [2018-01-22 17:36:57 +0000 UTC]

That depends on the condition. In good light, camera usually focuses correctly quickly and I do not need to take much shots. With poor light camera make take longer to focus and sometimes got it wrong (I usually can see that before actually taking any shot). Subject may already move while camera was focusing. The problem sometimes is that birds move to fast and the DOF is shallow - in this case I do take a lot of shots and have to refocus a number of times. In this kind of situation I can take up to 20-30 photos (sometimes more) of a bird and got 2-3 good (or at least decent) ones out of it.

If you have too many photos out of focus there may be several reasons:
1) camera's focus system is bad and needs good light conditions to work properly (sometimes brighter lenses can help here)
2) FF/BF (front focus/back focus) - cooperation problem between your camera and lenses results in camera focusing just a little too close/too far - in this case calibration is needed in some repair centre
3) too shallow depth of field (DOF) - can cause real pain if your subject moves much or you moved (even just a little bit) after camera caught focus

Thank you for the compliments. Appeciated!
