The small torii´s are a kind of Ema. When you pray for something special in your life (as a shinto-believer) you write your wish/pray on a Ema, and then hang/put it at the shrine. I´ve seen most of the Ema where people hope for good grades in school, good health for the family, or luck in their love-life.
