I want to give charcoal a try.
But am absolutely lost on what to get.
What do you use?
Please answer!

i always believe its not so much what you use but how you use it - i personally like the Generals charcoal pencils (hard, medium, soft, ex.soft) - and usually use Arches hotpress watercolor papers

its not much diff then pencil but allows for greater dark tones - i use it slower then graphite though - paper blending stumps, pastel blenders and kneaded erasers are also key - finding the best way to sharpen the coal is the hard part - good luck

this is really good!!!
Although what I think is hilarious is that the model, with out the collar and earing he'd look a little bit like Stephen Colbert. lol!!!

Amazing. Slight squints in the eyes peering through the glasses, detailed eyebrows, wispy locks and best of all the facial stubble. Wonderfully done!

Your drawings are rather exquisite.
How many hours did it take to complete this one?
But it is rather gorgeous.
The model isn't too bad, either. ^_^

thank you ... never really sure hour wise on anything i do - some days i work harder than others - this year has been an average of one drawing on this scale done each month so im not tempted to rush them ... though my goal is to produce more next year *

Well it definitely sounds better than drawing it and counting the hours whilst agonising it.
Good luck. ^_^
