some weeks ago we had a mysterious mass death of fish in that river, you'll still find many corpses all along the riverside, but all the plants are still alive...

That seems to happen now and then to different varieties of fish in different locations. We had a mass wipe out of carp in a few lakes last year. It's like they catch a virus.
