Description I meant to do this drawing at the start of April 2nd, but something came up at home. Anyways, the image is to honor the 13th Anniversary of HOTR for those who still remember the film and appreciate it for what it is without having to expect so much. The girls watch the sky pop with fireworks as the people responsible want to give them something to remember that will go on forever.

I, too, am rather fond of this film, despite its flaws, and I'm glad to see that at least some people give it the positive attention it didn't really receive on its initial release.

Fundamentally, I think the reason for its poor reception boils down to the following factors:

1. The filmmakers might have been trying a little too hard to remind audiences that it's intended as a comedy; pretty much every scene (with a few exceptions) contains a gag of one persuasion or another, with little breathing room. Also, some of the humor borders a little too much on what had become the established norm for DreamWorks following the runaway success of Shrek. (Tangentially, there are a fair number of jokes that are obviously not intended for use in a family-friendly film, and many of them come from Maggie. [One of these is her "cold shower" remark to Barry and Bob; I actually had to ask my mother what that meant after my most recent viewing, and when she explained it to me, I immediately thought, "How in the hey did they get THAT past the radar?!?"]

2. There's also the matter of how the main characters were developed.

     a. Maggie, though a headstrong and determined protagonist, is perhaps a bit too aggressive and confrontational.

     b. Mrs. Calloway could have stood to be a bit more diplomatic and openly pragmatic than she ultimately was; in the finished film, she appears to be just as standoffish as Maggie, especially in her interactions with the latter.

     c. Grace, for the first 2/3 or so of the film, doesn't seem to be completely with the program, and her "New Age" personality seems a schneck out of place in the time period of the story.

     d. Buck initially comes across as the girls' enemy, which makes it hard to like him. And believe you me, his antagonism of them starts to grate on one pretty dang quickly.

     e. Slim's motivations are rather simplistic, and he's just not all that threatening.

3. One reviewer has opined, "There was a lot going on in this film that was clearly about imitating the primary competition [primarily DreamWorks and Pixar, but also the nascent Blue Sky {creators of Ice Age}], rather than focusing on the expert storytelling for which Disney had become known during the Renaissance."* And, I must dutifully concede, I see where they come from.

So, as much as I personally enjoy the film, it behooves me [pun accidental] to say that it could have been a whole lot better....

That's my problem there, is some of these complaints are rather hypocritical in many ways that make no sense if some of the humor or content has been done before in past Disney and non Disney cartoons that I fail to understand why it should be such a bad problem now, or why should critics reviews be more important to listen to when they are not right here. It's the same of how they treated Cars with hypocritical views. And why can't cows have the same respect as dogs, cats, and mice when it comes to family films? Cows should not be treated and viewed as nothing but food animals, and who are those stupid critics to say that it's stupid to turn cows into heroes? I really don't see what's so bad about the "cold shower" remark like it's the worst thing in the world to overreact about, which could have only meant the bulls were about to run into that water dome. It's just ridiculous.

If Maggie is all that aggressive and confrontational, when did you hear about parents complaining about Willie the Giant, Tasmanian Devil, Timon & Pumbaa, or other past cartoon characters do the same thing, but then react differently with Maggie? Is it because she is a cow? Or why don't they ever complain about the situation of the supers going into hiding just to avoid scandal from ungrateful selfish citizens that turned bigoted and unwelcome to supers? Or with Shrek's nasty and gross manners in all four films, including his temper? Really people? What is your deal? And what do they even see in Merida who selfishly endangers the kingdom without any care, treats her mother like crap (back then if anyone spoke to their parents like that they would be whipped), poisons her mother with a potion without any second thoughts, and takes no real responsibility in the end, and still gets what she wants, and people call her a good role model? Do they award unlikeable and selfish behavior like that nowadays?

I don't see any problem with Grace. To be honest, tone deafness runs in the Disney family and always has when you look at Donald, Pluto, Drizella, and Scuttle in the past shorts and features. I think she is with the program, but possibly uses singing and peaceful solutions thinking it might make the best of the situation to not be too focused on so much negativity happening which does little to help.

Whether you like Buck or not, I've seen far worse unlikeable characters coming out of "The Nut Job" or "The Emoji Movie".

Well Yzma wasn't all that threatening either, yet she is still favored and loved for some reason, possessing no real powers or dangerous weapons, and doesn't seem all that scary. But people still like her. Sorry, Slim might not have been that threatening to some, but he was a master of disguise after all and still possessed a power that no other lawmen or bounty hunter could predict.

Even if it could have been a whole lot better, some people need to lighten up and stop taking things out of this film too seriously like it's the end of the world, which it is not. And they need to stop blaming it for ending 2D by itself which it did not as I found out. They should focus their hate on "Eight Crazy Nights".

I agree with several of your views (I try not to take it TOO seriously, and I don't believe in the slightest that the fact that the central characters are cattle has ANYTHING to do with its tepid reception), but in the broad scheme of things, the flaws present in Home on the Range are much more numerous and highly visible (to me, at least) than those of most of the films in Disney's "Experimental Phase" (with the exception of Chicken Little)*; and since I try to look at both the good and bad aspects of animated films instead of just writing them off as simply "all good" or "all bad," I would be lying if I said that the way the filmmakers treated it doesn't bother me in certain ways.

Call me what you will for saying this, but I think that if Home on the Range were being made in the Renaissance or Revival eras, they probably would've taken greater care in developing the characters in a way that audiences could develop a deeper interest in them (as it is now, they serve their purpose fairly well, but somehow, it feels as though they could have used a little something extra), as well as balancing out the humor with the more serious moments.

*Atlantis takes great care in establishing the rules of the world in which it is set, and boasts well-developed characters, but it lacks plot coherency and a central thematic "backbone." The others do, admittedly, have certain flaws of their own, but in each case, they are largely outweighed by the good elements.

(Once again, this is only MY opinion; I'm trying to go about this as tactfully as I can, and do not wish to offend you in ANY way whatsoever...)

No, I'm not going to insult or make fun of you for having your own points, even when some of it might be true. My only problem is hearing how most of the negativity has been rather hypocritical these days, especially with movie critics that seem to hate everything that audiences love, or that people treat them like gods that are NEVER wrong and anyone who likes what critics hate is NOT normal or right in the head, or whatever crap they carry. If Home on the Range were made during Walt's era, it might have done a great job the same as Pecos Bill, Johnny Appleseed, Alice in Wonderland, or Peter Pan. But from what I been noticing now, the film is becoming a cult classic.

Yep! What i can do is write a letter to the CEO and see if they can do a sequel to the movie, if it's ok with the CEO.

A HOTR sequel or TV series would be a neat idea, as long as they don't mess it up with lousy writers and directors the same as when they tried to do "The Emperor's New School" which turned out bad. But even if they don't take it, do not fear, for the fandom will still be around to give it that appreciation and praise it deserves that the company didn't treat right at the time of its release. I often wonder how a live action HOTR would turn out if it was directed by the same guy who did Rango. There will always be my HOTR OCs and villains.

I agree. But what I can do is talk to the CEO of the Disney company sometime this week for you. By the way, will you be doing more of Maggie in the near future?

Disneycow82 In reply to Goofygoof [2017-04-12 04:31:21 +0000 UTC]

I only hope they don't respond with hostility, rejection, and rudeness, using the old excuse in the book that HOTR killed 2D animation itself which turned out to be a big fat lie anyone will believe, but I know the facts that it's not true. I'm always afraid of that if I dared to ask them about HOTR or their other "underrated" works which is unfairly used for some kind of "unwanted experiments" or something that is another word for outcasts. Oh don't worry, I plan on doing more artwork for Maggie as soon as possible. Hopefully I can continue with "Blackened Steak" this weekend.

I hope they don't send me rude remarks either. I can't wait to see more of blackened streak. I won't worry about a thing. Just take your time! By the way, how are the girls (Maggie, Grace & Mrs Calloway) doing?

I wouldn't want you to risk it if that were true. I mean nobody likes rude replies, especially when it comes to their "underrated" films that they did not treat right like they should have, and shouldn't keep it that way. It never hurts to have improvements or further development like they do in the live action films. The girls are in my room, safe and sound, possibly getting in discussions with the new members.
