This is beautiful! I love Bella's hair! It looks just full of life. It's so easy to overwork hair, but you seem to have the technique down pat.

Experimented? It definitely looks like you've got the technique down pat. I love the sweater as well.. I just forgot to comment on it. It takes so much patience to make those two things look really well done - so good job

Great piece! *cough* even if it is twilight *cough*... I'm going to try to give an original critique, having read those above, though it may not be 'technical'. I notice looking at the drawing, that the male figure's face isn't on the same plane. What I mean is, his nose and mouth seem to be skewed/rotated a bit from his eyes/head. Otherwise, very nice!

Dina-Marchiori In reply to Kyverica [2010-04-25 09:13:13 +0000 UTC]

thx a lot for letting me notice... i have no technical background... i mean i'm completely self taught and so i had a lot of difficulties with the proportions of his face, the way his head is inclined made everything harder and this is the best result i could get back then i'm trying to get over my proportions problem very hard, in fact i'm working on a pic with four full lengh subjects, hoping the exercise will help me ^^

i'm so glad u've liked it anyway

Daniel-Storm [2010-04-25 00:21:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh my!
Very arresting composition with a lot of interesting angles.
Your proportions look pretty good, as does the foreshortening.
You really nailed the look and character of the subjects. You can feel the anticipation and tension in the air. The woman has a great countenance to her face that speaks of both fear and desire.
You have a great range of values in this with plenty of contrast. Her hair looks a bit harsh...almost as if it is sculpted from wood. It looks as if you drew the hair like one would draw ribbons...and that’s a good idea. It’s just that the edges of those ribbons, if softened up, would allow the hair to flow more naturally.
Otherwise, good technique use of value changes and transitions to show the planes and contours of the faces and clothing.
It's an excellent piece of work!

Dina-Marchiori In reply to Daniel-Storm [2010-04-25 09:17:52 +0000 UTC]

ths so much... about the her hair i tried to experiment a bit, don't really know why... ^^ i'm not good at hyper realistic hair so i tried to do something more "manga-like" but u're right, maybe if they were softened up more it would have been better, thx so much for this critique...
i'm glad u said the proportions where good from your point of view 'cos i know it's my waek point...
thx so much for the critique

Daniel-Storm In reply to Dina-Marchiori [2010-04-25 16:25:16 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! Hey...there is nothing wrong with experimenting with different looks to see what works for you!
As for proportions, yes...they look good. My only question was the man's eye. So i traced an imaginary line from inside his skull to his chin, and it all looked like it lined up to me, so i did not mention it. What you have there, with the guy, is EXTREME foreshortening. Simple foreshortening can be a problem, and you have a piece with foreshortening that is really hard to get right. If proportions bother you, then you can always use a grid to check your proportions.

Gorgeous drawing. Although I'll freely admit I'm not a big Twilight Fan, I can tell you that I still very much enjoy this drawing for its technique and skill!! You have the proportions nicely brought together. Very nice shading and use of tones to give the piece depth and fullness. You have yourself a very nice piece here.

Since you asked for critique on technique...honestly, the only thing I could really suggest or comment on is the shading. Ok, not so much the shading itself since it's gorgeous but more the softening it up. Right now it looks slightly 'rough' as the paper texture shows through the pencil shadings. I've found using some form of blending tool will soften the shading up and take away that paper texture. For the clothing, I say it's up to you since you may very well want that texture, but the skin is where I would definitely recommend a blending tool.(tortillion is what i use, but I've heard of others using Q-tips, kleenex etc...never use your fingers because the oil on your fingers will get into the drawing and will yellow it over time)

Beautiful work! Hope you're able to garner something useful from my long windedness

i'm so glad u enjoyed the piece in particular 'cos u're not a twilight fan thx so much for the advices in the shading, in fact i've already done something on the metter: i started to use smooth papers (and it's so much better to work with them ^^) and kleenex to soften the shading... i'm still learning how to use them though, i consider myself a completely beginner since i started to draw seriusly only 4 months ago and this one was actually my third "serious" drawing if i can call it this way... i know u'll have heaps of things to do but... would u like to take a look at some other pieces of mine? if u're not interested it's not a problem

thx so much for your critique and u spending time over it, it really helped me out

Dina-Marchiori In reply to zebrabuntbarsch [2010-03-13 19:51:50 +0000 UTC]

yeah i know i could do better with the likness in particular in robert case.. it was really difficult for me to draw his face because i have no drawning technical support, i've never studied it at school or anything so sometime prospective and proportion are a little hard for me to get right on the paper ^^
i'm sorry in particular that u found no feeling in their gaze 'cos i tried to work on that ...but it's good to not receive compliments all the time, critics are really useful so i'll try to work harder from now on..
if you have time i'd be really thankful if u'd like to take a look at my other works, to know your point of view and see what i can improve! thx a lot
