When science make researches where they do something stupid, risky, close to insane in name of their sheer curiosity, ego and prestige, instead of reading a single report that would avoid taking precious lives.
Bad side of science. When said geniuses are not so bright after all. Just kids playing with others' lives.

I don't know about you, but around here we take action, we don't read about it in long-winded papers! So after being handed the option to either read a two-thousand page report on the supposed 'dangers' of that mysterious new space rock sample, or to shoot it with that shiny new gamma ray gun that was finished earlier today, of course we chose the gun!
I think we received reports of equipment and pieces from that particular laboratory landing in Australia. How they hit Sydney instead of the miles of barren outback or ocean, well, that's what Testing For Reproducibility is for! We just need to find that gamma ray gun first.

It's essentially an amplifier. Something similar to how things with negative resistance behave (except with magic), the red magic being a futile emergency attempt at creating a choke/ballast. Hence the containment team.

Nopony listened to Maud when she swore that the power within the rocks would prove too intense for us to contain. Nopony imagined the kind of terror that those igneous shards were capable of.
When we learned the truth, it was too late.
Some ponies fled the stone carnage and sheltered in magical underground bunkers called vaults.
That didn't really work out. Because, you know... there's a lot of rock down there. They were all squished like bugs.
So maybe war changed a little bit.

Those who couldn't make it in the vaults found shelter where they could. Due to the seismic nature of the apocalypse, the pegasi found themselves the safest in their sky-borne cities, though that is not to say that they were untouched. Now the sky is festering with floatin' boulders and islands of dirt and earth, as the parts of the ground were thrust upwards, tearing apart Cloudsdale and other pegasus communities. The pegasi lost many to this disaster, and to this day they refer to it as 'The Calamity'
Now the Pegasi have built a new home out of the detrius, a safe haven in the sky to protect themselves from the rocky cataclysm below. This Bastion is their home, your home. But this kid from the Bastion will not stay here forever; he will go to the Wasteland and witness the results of Equestria's Fallout for himself.
