Description edit: Changed the title. It was exceptionally lame. It's still lame, but at least it's taken from something within the comic that's connected to the overall purpose.
Made back in... February or something? March? Oh jeez. I don't know why I waited so long, now it's all smudgy and the shading's rubbed off a little. I might have to upload a cleaner version later, if I get around to it.

Anyway, assignment for Black & White. (I was desperate to make something Hanna-related for that class from the beginning.) Chapter two is my favorite!
I guess I wanted to toy some more with religious ideas. Look at me, being controversial! Oh my! *shot*

-insert my normal blend of tangents, praise, and awe-

also, uh, what's up with the sort of, uh, multiple wing thing?

'Tis a hand on the top! Since the aim was to sorta interlock things, the hand kind of looks like it's part of the wing or something. I've been waiting for somebody to notice how poorly differentiated it is, haha ;;

And thanks!

Ooooh, I see the hand now. Yeah, that looks cool and symbolic and stuff. 'cause before it was just "Oh, Zombie and Hanna and Zombie has wings!" But now it's all the wings are symbolic and the hand is symbolic and oh my god everything is a freud and it's so pretty and run-on sentences. c:

SYMBOLISMMMM
ahaha I love how I can't help but throw pretentious symbolism all over everything I draw. ♥ I like the symbolism more than the art sometimes.

p.s.: "everything is a freud" is one of my new favorite quotes. I want to apply it to everything now.

You liking "everything is a freud" just made me giggle so much. I just threw that in there because I think that other people finding the symbolism in art is stupid. It's really just hit and miss if you didn't make the art yourself.

I.E: PAINT SPLASHES ON A CANVAS ARE PRETTY. THEY DO NOT REPRESENT YOUR MOM.

p.s.: Haha, yaaay. Whenever someone says something snooty and arrogant, just reply with "EVERYTHING IS A FREUD" and problem is solved!

I love it when people interpret symbolism, actually! It's like interpreting literature in your English classes. You'll never fully understand the intent of the author, but it's the act of interpreting and analyzing from your own unique point of view that breathes life into a piece.

But yeah, when interpretation gets too out of hand it's just ridiculous. For example, some of that modern art stuff is just... eesh. I mean, painting a toilet blue and calling it art? THAT. THAT IS A FREUD.

Setsune-Hoshiko In reply to dictatorofrandomosia [2010-10-25 02:04:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah, that's fun. But I hated it when my English teacher insisted that Bertha Rochester either symbolised the conflict between England and Ireland, or symbolised the dissatisfation of Charlotte Bronte with the treatment of women during that time. I mean, yeah, the Charlotte Bronte thing has some logic, but goddamnit, can't she be a character in her own right? And can't I decide what she symbolises?

Anyway, yes, lots of modern art is a freud. For example, the other day I was watching this documentary on art and up pops this artist who had taken a big canvas and painted a big, perfectly round red dot in the exact middle of it. And it sold for an ungodly amount and I went WHAT. If you wanted that, you could buy a Japanese flag and stretch it over some canvas.

Also, it represented the loneliness of something or other or some shit.

dictatorofrandomosia In reply to taube3 [2010-10-10 06:18:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
The wings-- and the clawed hand resting on top of them-- are meant to represent a couple of things: what kind of person {...} was before his death; whether his return to life is meant as a blessing or a curse; what kind of a person he may grow to be as he gleans information from his past; {...}'s internal grappling with the nature of his undeath; and, well, probably some other pseudo-philosophical nonsense that I've forgotten since drawing this.

Really great question. It gave me an excuse to use tons of semicolons!

You've captured the characters so wonderfully. This image is beautiful, I like it rough. (The uh-style. don't read into that. Forget that we're on the internet.) I'm kind of floored by your talent.

SHADING~ So beautiful.

The only thing that I keep wondering though is if Hannah has crazy balancing skills. I haven't read the webcomic but judging by the turn in the upper body, you should at least be able to see some of his other leg or foot.

dictatorofrandomosia In reply to Torreschette [2010-10-10 03:09:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks bby! :>

rofl I know. The point of the assignment was to fit shapes together, so I left all of this space open to hopefully squash something else into those spaces, but ehhh... didn't really happen. Thus, Hanna is a double amputee.
He lost so much in the war.

Torreschette In reply to dictatorofrandomosia [2010-10-10 03:14:04 +0000 UTC]

Maybe he's sitting on a perfect white box, so perfectly white against a perfectly white background as to have no shading what-so-ever.

Isn't there some huge irony that he lost limbs and not zombie...?

dictatorofrandomosia In reply to Torreschette [2010-10-10 03:21:57 +0000 UTC]

There is always an explanation. I was thinking m'self that he was in the process of Disapparating and had splinched himself, but that's just because I'm going back through Harry Potter. (hnnnngrarrrgh I love Harry Potter so much.)

It's almost as ironic as raaaaain on your wedding day, or a free ride when you've already paid; it might even be like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.

p.s.: Misread your new sig as:
"... until we smash into the rainbow."
Which-- well, I think that's a pretty freakin' sweet interpretation, really.

XD maybe. So I guess his leg and arm are in a candy shop? Or someplace?

First two are just kinda sad, but the last one is just beautiful.

XD Did you know that rainbows used to be bad luck?

dictatorofrandomosia In reply to Torreschette [2010-10-10 03:52:05 +0000 UTC]

They're at Hogwarts, Hogwarts, hoggy warty Hogwarts. Traumatizing the first years. Maybe.

Alanis Morissette is awesome. "Ironic" is a pretty sad song, and people make fun of it because a lot of the examples she uses don't exactly fit the definition of irony, but I really do love it.

And... are you serious?! Dude! How could anyone ever be afraid of a rainbow? They are only some of the best things to ever grace the universe!

Gaww, thanks Jules. ♥ You must've seen it before, though, haven't you? This is the sketchbook that I bring to school... then again, you're never in any of my classes, so maybe that doesn't help. >:T Mrrrgh.

The objective of this assignment was to fit together multiple objects and manipulate their negative space, but unfortunately I abandoned all sense of gravity when drawing this and left Hanna a little off-balance. XD; They were supposed to be standing back-to-back more, hmm... in spirit?
Either way, Hanna's got a pretty shaky support to his back. I predict clumsytimes immediately after this fit of epic posing.

i might have glimpsed it before, but i seriously doubt it. we should unite and sign up for similar art classes next year. it would make me really sad if we didn't have any classes together again. ONE ART CLASS TOGETHER IS ALL I'M ASKING!!!! maybe bribing counslers?

haha! hanna falling sounds like a normal day for him. epicness followed by clumsiness with a ? look from {...}.

The wings are making my inner ornithologist weep, but he's shut up by my inner artist, who's fangirling over the awesome shading. Was this graphite or charcoal or pure pixie dust and love...?

dictatorofrandomosia In reply to raequiem [2010-10-10 03:15:46 +0000 UTC]

Ahaha, oh jeez, I know! The anatomy of that wing is absolutely atrocious. I wish I'd taken the time to look up some references, but I left it too long and had to scribble it in the day it was due.
And thank you!

Pixie dust and love sounds about right, but Ebony jet black extra smooth pencils helped with the fine detail. We use them at school, and I loved them so much that I ordered a pack on eBay. They're pretty great. ♥
