cold = rece
The only two times when cold = frig, is when it refers to the temperature outside, or when someone's cold, still refering to temperature, and hmmm, how can I explain it, better leave it to the examples
"mi-e frig - I'm cold"
"mi-e frig la picioare" - "my feet are cold", but a better translation would be something like "I'm cold at my feet"
In all other cases, cold is rece.
This soup is cold - Supa asta e rece
She gave me a cold look - Mi-a aruncat o privire rece (when you 'give' someone a look, we often use 'a arunca', which means to throw 
Cold blooded - Cu sange rece
My hands are so cold - Mainile imi sunt atat de reci (see, we use 'rece' here, not frig. If I'd want to use frig, I'd say 'mi-e atat de frig la maini'

Cred ca am inteles explicatia ta. Frig ~ freezing, frig is used for cold things that make you freeze. I think they're using similar constructions in French and Finnish, saying smth like I have it cold at my feet.
And in German, you can also throw looks at someone ;]

Recea is 'the cold', female version. Like... "nu mi-a placut recea vreme de ieri" - "I didn't like the cold weather (of) yesterday"
