Description A bridge in York. Not sure which, I think it carries Bridge St. and Lower Ousegate...

Some editing in photoshop

Critique encouraged

Also, Im not sure what the 6 orange lights on the bridge piers are. They dont seem to be coming from anywhere... AND, on another shot, they are in different places. Spooky stuff

I would of tried to darken the sky more and got more red colour using curves personally, just think a shot like this would benefit with more 'mood'. Like it tho.

Thanks for the critique much appreciated. Wish my photoshop skills were up to doing that! So far I can only manage basic adjustments! Heh.

god, i love uk. nice pic. the reflection on the pic is a really nice touch. that bridge looks fantastic and the village all around it gives a nice feel to the pic. the sky has a great color and it seems like you took the pic at the right time.

A lovely and interesting image. A beautifully balance composition. I quite enjoy the grain and for me it adds to the atmosphere of the dusk. I love the mysterious lights. They make me think of the Central Australian Min Min lights ...which I have experienced . I noticed these lights have no reflection.

I hadn't noticed the lack of reflection- even more weird...

And thanks for the comments.

Nice shot.

I love the reflection and the lights on the water. How you've captured this piece from your position is just right. The balance on both sides gives it a sturdy feel to things.

The time of day is pretty cool as well.

Thanks. It wasn't quite that balanced - a bit has been cropped off the right. Yeah the timing was about right, only problem was I didnt have my tripod so its shot handheld with a high-ish ISO giving it more grain than I'd like!

Ah...

You wouldn't have seen it otherwise!

Hmm... I'm not really familiar with the terminology as I'm still new to the D-SLR etc.

I've only got a digital myself.

Lol

I want to get a 450D as well, but apparently, the 40D is better.

DHphotographic In reply to 3wyl [2009-01-06 18:09:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it is, but its also more expensive so it would be! The 50D is out now though, so it should come down in price soon enough...

3wyl In reply to DHphotographic [2009-01-06 20:34:50 +0000 UTC]

I see that now. I really want to spend more money on a lens, but... if it's better, then I guess it's worth the money. *shrugs*

Not many people have said 50D. 40D is apparently really good...

Yeah, lenses make a massive difference. I kinda wish Id spent less on the camera and more on a better lens, maybe got a 350 or 400D instead and a better quality standard zoom. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

3wyl In reply to DHphotographic [2009-01-08 21:30:18 +0000 UTC]

How much did you spend?

Indeed.

But that's pretty interesting. I was asking in the dA forums whether I should buy a camera now, or wait until Canon releases a newer model and buy that one.

All of them recommended a 40D, but I wanted 450D. And 40D costs quite a lot than 450D. I wanted to spend more money on the lenses, but... yeah, I see what you mean.

At least you can give that hindsight to other people.

DHphotographic In reply to 3wyl [2009-01-08 22:00:24 +0000 UTC]

It was £440 (£490 + £50 cashback)

Its all well and good giving the hindsight to people- people said that to me, kind of wish Id listened. Then again, I might not have been as happy with another camera. Who knows. I guess it mainly depends how quickly you want it and how patient you are. Eventually Ill get the money for some nice lenses then and will still have a more up to date camera, where as I wouldnt if I had a 350/400D...

If you have the money to spend on it, a 40D would be a better option since it will take you longer to outgrow it in terms of ability (technical and composition/artisic wise). Conversely, it will also be a bigger jump in terms of technicality and features from a point and shoot than an entry level like a 400,450,1000D or whatever. I still havent got to grips with all the features of my 450D!

That's not actually a bad price. I thought it would be in the £500 region or something.

Hmm... Very true.

I have... £1200. They're my life savings, and currently 40D costs about £800. That just leaves me with £400 to spend on lenses. =/

Very true. But in between learning, I can save up once again and once I've got the gist, jump in and get a decent lens.

It's massive isn't it? In terms of what you can do I mean.

DHphotographic In reply to 3wyl [2009-01-09 20:10:05 +0000 UTC]

You could get a decent lens with £400, one that wouldnt pull down the quality of the camera (like the kit lens probably will, I dont know what lens the 40D comes with). Only problem is, that maxes out your budget, and you need to remember there are loads of little things you dont think about- camera bag, memory cards, lens cloth, maybe a spare battery, and depending what you want to to maybe a tripod/flash guns. It all adds up!!

3wyl In reply to DHphotographic [2009-01-09 21:18:17 +0000 UTC]

I don't get why they don't sell the camera separately. It would be cheaper, and we wouldn't have to be laboured down with a lens that isn't that good. =/

Very true. All these things. -.-

Still, it's fun. I'll just have to find the money from somewhere.

DHphotographic In reply to 3wyl [2009-01-09 22:35:09 +0000 UTC]

They do, you can buy the camera on its own, or body only as they call it. I dont know about the 40D, but for the 450D the kit lens only adds an extra £20-£50 or so to the price. You would think they would bundle a better (ie slightly more expensive) lens with the 40D so it might be a bigger addition. Not sure

3wyl In reply to DHphotographic [2009-01-09 23:07:43 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I'll have to research into that. I'll probably just wait until the next new model comes out. Thanks a lot for everything by the way.
