that is impressive, I imagine a few hours of your life died putting that one together.
Whats your overall opinion of C4D? I've thought about picking it up but haven't got around to it yet.

dFEVER In reply to omaolain [2009-02-03 03:43:48 +0000 UTC]

barely an hour i might say. most of the stuff used were premade renders and vectors and used in previous projects. plus i don't mind to spending time on such projects as long as in the end i get paid which, unfortunately, in this case i did waste that time because my design was not the one chosen. but what can i do? keep working and satisfying my passion.

C4D? C4D is my personal software of choice for 3d modeling, compositing, etc. It's a very user-friendly software, much more flexible than 3d max, blender, lightwave, etc. i'm not sure if it has the same rendering, modeling or export options as any of the above but c4d is all i need. It's simple to get the hand of it. Every time i open it up, i find something new about it, new effect, new options, etc. I'm more based on graphic design instead of game design, architecture, animation, etc. so this is the perfect software for me.

Check out the links in this journal [link] to see the short experimental animations i did in c4d. And also this 1 min long animation [link]

Thanks for asking

I went ahead and got C4D today and tried it out, my first experiment with C4D + CS3 here [link]

You said your design wasnt chosen, are you doing design competitions?

yes

Design comps are a waste of you time and talent. You should look into doing proper freelance work.
Humor me and check out NO!SPEC at [link]

If you want a way to get some proper design contracts and ensure that you get paid for your work you should go to ODesk at httpdesk.com I have done quite a bit of work there. Most projects posted on ODesk are payment ensured.

omaolain In reply to dFEVER [2009-02-03 23:15:41 +0000 UTC]

I do my very best to turn people away from design comps and SPEC work in general, its a hazard to those who do it as well as the graphic design community as a whole.
Besides you have too much talent to be wasting it on projects that may or may not pay you for your efforts.

Good luck and happy designing

thanks. i'm planning on opening my own business/agency based online. that way clients can come to me and sign contracts how does that sound?

omaolain In reply to dFEVER [2009-02-04 01:16:26 +0000 UTC]

its a very popular route to take, its difficult to get into. Just make sure you have plenty of clients lined up and some client reviews to post never hurts.

dFEVER In reply to omaolain [2009-02-04 01:41:58 +0000 UTC]

i sure will. that is great advice you give me. any more?

omaolain In reply to dFEVER [2009-02-04 02:20:40 +0000 UTC]

The only other thing I would tell you is to just put together a solid portfolio and start hunting down clients, and stay away from spec work.

dFEVER In reply to omaolain [2009-02-04 03:02:27 +0000 UTC]

but where can i find these clients? i know if i find some, they can recommend me through the word of mouth to others if i satisfy them. but where do i find these first clients? i can get around 4 reviews right now from past work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

omaolain In reply to dFEVER [2009-02-04 03:28:34 +0000 UTC]

4 reviews is an excellent place to start.
As for finding new clients, look around at local businesses in your area and call them up offering your services. Just make sure you research them and can explain how your services can help. Doing it locally so you can actually meet with them face to face builds trust with a client and makes it easier to get a contract with them.
Outside of looking at local needs, you are in the same situation as the rest of us. Like I said try out ODesk.com, its an excellent place to start and most clients pay pretty decent.

thats badass how do you do that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dFEVER In reply to bigdiZZay [2009-01-31 20:32:10 +0000 UTC]

well, i first found an appropriate font and modified it a bit to fit the requirements and overall theme (cybernetic, technological, outer space). I then added some text effects like gradients, texture, shine, inner and outer shadows. Then I moved to the background. I rendered some abstract shapes in Cinema4D and imported them in Fireworks. Played with color a bit. Added small details like graphs , labels, etc, that add to that overall theme and voila!
