Chapter 5: Realisation

Derrek woke with a start. Sitting up, he took in his suroundings. He was in one of the clenic rooms. He saw the glass door and window that lead into the hall. He then began to feel a numb feeling in his chest and scratches on his face and arms.

Just as he was about to lay back down, one of the clenic nurses came in. behind her was Derrek's Parents. they came up and hugged him, careful of his bandages.

After a long moment, Derrek asked, "What happened?"

"The town police were about to go on a search party for you, but when they reached the edge of town, you were lying on the ground unconscious. You had two broken ribs and a broken leg. You will be using a cast for a few weeks until that heals. What I want to know is how you ended up so hurt?" His mom asked, relief in her voice.

"I... I was chased by Pete into the woods. I found myself falling down a cliff and breaking my leg on a rock. After that I... I looked for a way up the cliff and managed to get back home." He saw his mom gasp at what she heard, she knew he was hiding something, but pushed no farther. Feeling cramped, Derrek sat up. "I want to go outside, please."

His mom was about to protest, but was stopped by her husband. "Sure, son. But first, I would like to talk to you alone. Come with me."

Derrek reached for his cruches and followed his dad outside of the room. When they were out of earshot from the others, his dad began to speak. "Your hiding something. I can tell."

"What? No i'm not-" Derrek stopped when his dad put a hand on his shoulder. "You know I'll be here for you, okay?" Derrek just nodded. Did his dad know? Or was he just being there like he always did? Before he could think any more about it, his dad said, "Go, and try to stay away from the cliffs from now on. In fact, since you cant walk without cruches, try to stay inside the edge of town, OK?" His dad winked, patted Derrek on the shoulder and walked past back into the room. Derrek stood there, mouth agape. He looked back to see His parents talking to the nurse. Shrugging it off, he walked out of the mini-hospital.

As he got outside, he was stopped by the two lackies that followed Pete. Derrek never bothered knowing their names. "What do you guys want?"

They hesitated for a moment, when one said, "To apologize."

Derrek stood there, suprised. They were apologizing? "Go on."

"After what happened, we desided to stop following Pete around. the only reason we did was so that he wouldn't go messin' with us. That didn't turn out well." The other boy said, laughing nervously.

Derrek laughed too. "Hey, I havent had a chance to even know your names."

"I'm Daniel." One said. "And I'm Rennel." The other said. The in unison, they said, "We're brothers!"

Derrek almost fell backwards. They were brothers? He never knew.

"Hey Derrek, Something wierd happened the day you were found on the edge of town."

Derrek tensed up. "Yeah?"

"When the police found you, it was the same time that Pete disappeared. Its strange. We thought the police found out it was his fault and locked him up, but when we went to the station, they hadn't seen him eather."

Derrek froze. What was this he was hearing? Pete vanishing without a trace? A horrible thought came to mind. He remembered the feathers all over Leocyn's cave. "When was this?" He asked, trying to remain calm.

"Two days ago. You have any Idea what might have happened to him? I know it might be better without him, but people don't just vanish into thin air like that."

"No, not a clue." Derrek said quickly, "Now, If you exuce me, I have to get home and check on something." Before the brothers could respond, Derrek pushed past.

When Derrek reached the edge of town, he made sure no one else was around. When he was sure no one was near, he called out, "Leocyn!"

With only a few seconds of waiting, Leocyn calmly walked out of the treeline.

"Wha... How long have you been there?" Derrek asked.

"For about two days. I stayed close to the town so I could know when you woke." Leocyn's eyes narrowed. "You seem nervous. What's wrong?"

"Leocyn. Be honest with me, did you by chance see a big fat person about a foot taller than me? Always wore a red shirt and blue pants? Everyone new him as Pete."

Leocyn paused for a moment, then nodded once.

"Do you know where he is? He has been missing for two days, since you brought me back to town."

Leocyn didn't hesitate this time, he nodded vigorously. He had a big grin on his face. A second later, he raised a claw and began to run his stomach.

"you... What did you do?" Derrek Asked, shocked at the realisation. What he thought happened was pin-point acurate.

"I'd say it as obvious. I never did have human before, they taste kind of salty, but it feels amazing when hey try to escape."

"They?"

"They as in humans. I only ate one." Leocyn said, yawning. derrek saw rows of very sharp teeth. Derrek relaxed a bit by that little info, but not by much. "Leocyn. What you did is very, very bad. This is not just some bird like the ones you ate before, these are Humans like me. If one goes missing, many others will go in search for them. You will be found and they might think you were the cause, which you are."

"Then I'll just eat the all one by one."

"No!"

Leocyn paused. He stopped rubbing his stomach and stared at derrek. Derrek tensed up, he had no intention of getting on Leocyn's bad side.

"Leocyn, you have to understand. You cannot hunt humans anymore. Understand? Never. I wouldn't go hunting the dragons you know and love, would I?"

"I don't know any others."

"But still, would I go hunt them when I know it would make you upset, knowing its your own kind?"

Leocyn paused for a moment, then lowered his head. "No... you wouldn't."

Derrek began to rise in confidence. He was getting through to Leocyn. "Promise me, Leocyn, that you will never hunt another human again."

Derrek noticed that Leocyn hesitated. Several seconds passed. He was seriously thinking this over. Then, Leocyn said, "I promise."

Derrek's fear began to rise as much as his relief. That long hesitation told him that Leocyn just might not stop. But he didn't let it show. "So, Leocyn, why did you go after Pete?"

Leocyn brightened up. He wanted to share his hunt with Derrek badly. "After I set you down on the outside of the town, I saw three other humans walking down the street. I didn't know what other humans did, so I thought i'd evesdrop on them. When I got close enough, I overheard them talking. 'you two will never speak of this to anyone. Got it?' the big one you know as Pete said. 'No, Pete, this has gone far enough. We're through being your underdogs.' One of the smaller humans said. Then the big one picked the one that spoke off the ground. 'Listen, shorty. If you tell the police or anyone else about Derrek falling off that cliff and it being my fault, I will make certain you go off that cliff as well before I get sent to juvi.' He dropped the boy and the two ran off, leaving the big one alone.

"After hearing what they did, I grew angry. His back was to me, so i krept up close to him. When he was right under me, I said softly, 'You will pay for what you did to Derrek.' the human turned around and looked up at me. Before he could scream, I bent down and engulfed his head. that was the first time I tasted human. It was entoxicating and I couldn't stop myself. I proceeded to swallow him whole and alive.

"He was big and it was very difficult. He struggled the entire time and three times I almost lost my grip. But I managed to get down to his stomach area and after that, it was much easier. I got down to his knees, then raised my head off the ground, bringing him into the air. Gravity took hold then and did the rest of the work for me. When he reached my stomach, he was kicking and fighting. The sensation was so... pleasurable that I couldn't move for several minutes. It was only when the movement began to slow was I able to go back into the forest and enjoy my meal."

Derrek was so suprised, his mouth was wide open. Forgetting his cruch, he fell sideways onto the ground. Picking himself up, he looked back at Leocyn. He couldn't believe it. The dragon he knew and cared for was a man-eater. If he didn't know more about Leocyn, he would have ran screaming.

"Leocyn. what you did was beyond bad. this could reveal you. Tomorrow, we are going to find you a safer place to hide."
