I love the way the lighting strikes the skull in this picture.
It makes it more gloomy and distant.
The rough strokes and sharp highlights makes it a lot more realist and make it seem like this skull is coming from the darkness.
Also, the residue from the skull adds a nice touch to the picture because it makes it feel like it's decaying.
Although I love this picture, I have to rate you low on originality as both skulls and the rough styles commonly used with them have been done many times before.
Overall, the rough feel of the picture and the essence of "decay" or "death" makes this picture have a subtle, but large impact.
