Description
After Kel had fallen asleep Shimer quietly left the apartment and made her way to the docking bay. When she got there, she could hear music drifting from one of the ships. Walking over to the ship Shimer could see a pair of black boots sticking out from under a cruiser. Smiling, she went over and tapped one of the boots with her foot.
“Yo!!” came a cheery voice.
Shimer laughed. “Come on out, Nav.”
There were metal clangs as Nav put down his tools and rolled out from under the ship. He looked up and grinned at Shimer as he wiped the grease from his face.
“What’s up, Shim?” he asked as he stood up and turned off the music.
“Nothing much. I was just wondering if you’ve seen Deven. I brought him some lunch. Varin said that he didn’t take any with him today.”
Nav smiled when he saw the box Shimer was holding.
“You sure do like spending time with him. Don’t you think he’s kind of mean?” he said with a wink as he picked up an engine part.
Shimer blushed and shuffled her feet as Nav started to install the part in the ship.
“He’s not ‘mean’, Nav. He’s just….grumpy”
“Grumpy? Is that what you call it! The dude NEVER smiles, Shimer.”
“Yes he does. You just….have to catch him in the right mood.”
“Shim, I think you’re the only one who can ever catch Deven in a good mood.”
Shimer laughed. “Now I know that’s not true.”
Nav raised an eyeridge and looked at Shimer. “What do you mean?”
“I know for a fact that Deven has a soft spot for Vima’s brother. Sometimes I wonder if they really are brothers.”
“Now that you mention it, I have noticed that…” Nav was quiet for a minute. “But you DO like Deven, don’t you?” Nav asked after he had finished the part installation.
Shimer looked at the lunch in her hands and smiled as she kicked her foot. “Yeah. I do like him. He may be grumpy…” she looked at Nav, who was smirking, “He does have a gentle side.”
Nav smiled at his friend. “Maybe you should tell him.”
Shimer blushed and waved a hand. “No! I can’t tell him yet! I…I don’t even know if he likes me like that…”
“You’ll never know till you tell him, Shim.”
“I know…and I will. Just…not yet.”
Nav smiled again. “Well, I think he’s in the next bay. His ship is there, so my bet is you’ll find him there.”
“Thanks, Nav.” Shimer started to walk away, and then turned back around. “Oh! Tell Rolan I said ‘hi’!”
Shimer giggled as she dodged a dirty rag and went into the neighboring docking bay. She walked down the rows of ships until she came across an oddly shaped ship with gray strips down the side. She looked up and saw that the cockpit hatch was open and the control panel was on. Stepping back, Shimer tried to see if anyone was in the cockpit.
“Dev? You up there?” she called.
No answer.
“Dev?!”
There was silence in the cockpit then a heavy sigh could be heard. “I thought I told you not to call me ‘Dev’.”
Shimer giggles to herself. “Come on down, Deven. I have some lunch for you."
A grey eye pokes out of the cockpit and spies the box Shimer is holding. “Just leave it on the table and I’ll eat it later.”
“I don’t think so. By the time you feel like eating it’ll be cold and gross. Just come down here and eat Deven.”
“Later.”
“Don’t make me come up there.”
“Like you would. You’re afraid of heights.”
Shimer stomps her foot and walks over to the cruiser. She stops to look at the size of the craft, gulping at how high it towers over her. Shaking her head she sets her mind to the task and begins to climb up the ship. As she nears the top, Shimer drops the box into the cockpit.
“What?!” exclaimed Deven as he stood up to find the pink eyed Irken just outside the pilot’s seat.
Shimer looks Deven with determined eyes. “I told you not to make me come up here.”
Deven sighs. “Fine…Just get up here before you get hurt.”
Shimer smiles as she starts to climb the rest of the way into the ship. But before she can make her way into the cockpit her foot slips.
“Ah!” Shimer tries to grab a hand hold but none are near enough.
“Shimer!” Deven rushes to the edge of the pilot’s seat and just manages to grab a hold of Shimer’s wrist.
Gritting his teeth Deven heaves Shimer the rest of the way up and flops into the pilot’s seat. Shimer clutches Deven’s shirt as she takes deep breaths to fight back her tears. After she calms down she looks up at Deven, and is surprised to see worried grey eyes.
“You okay?” asked Deven as Shimer sat up.
“Yeah, I’m okay.”
“That has to be the stupidest thing I’ve seen someone do. If you’re afraid of heights then don’t try and prove something by doing it anyway.”
“I only did it because you wouldn’t have eaten if I had left you alone!”
“Maybe I didn’t want anything to eat in the first place!”
“You need to eat more Deven! Varin told me that you haven’t been eating right! All you do is work on your ship and train with Kel!”
“Because I want to stay in shape! And I want my ship to be in fighting condition! Or do you WANT me to blow up? And I don’t see you harping on Kel to take better care of herself!”
“Its not like I don’t try Deven! But you know how Kel can get. I…I just don’t want you to get sick because you won’t eat right.”
Deven groans and leans back in his chair. “Fine….I’ll eat your lunch.. But next time don’t throw yourself off my ship just to prove a point.”
Shimer smiles as she makes herself comfortable and Deven opens his lunch and starts to eat.
