The votes are tallied, and the Cute Monster Design Challenge  semi-finalist results are in! We challenged you, the most talented community of artists, to design a t-shirt that encompasses the endearing sensibilities of a cute monster, and the results are nothing short of awesome.

Didn't make it into the top 50 Semi-Finalist pool?

Not to worry! This time we're trying something new, in addition to the 2 winners selected from the top 50 semi-finalists, the judges will select an additional winner out of the ENTIRE POOL of entries! So stay tuned to see the final winners announcement, because one will be an entry not mentioned here.

We hope you enjoyed this Design Challenge as much as we did! Check back soon to see the winners, but until then, enjoy the astoundingly cute monsters whose artists made it to the semi-finals!

These entries represent the top 50 most-voted-for qualifying entries. Some of the
top-voted entries have been disqualified because they did not adhere to the rules
or contained unlicensed third-party content. There were also a few designers
who had multiple entries in the top 50 most-voted, and, as stated in the Official
Terms, only one design per designer is represented in the Semi-Final
judging round; the highest-voted entry appears in the semi-finalist pool.

I am not sure I understand what you are saying here but just in case I will open with my usual statement, "You do know that one of the prizes will be judged from all of the submissions without using the vote system and because of this you are still eligible to win?"

Some time in the next month. Shouldn't be longer than that. If we try to rush them they might start tossing scores of submissions in order to speed up the process. Starting with those who commented here rushing them or criticizing them in any way! lol (just kidding about that last part >I hope< but the month thing might even be true based on past contests)

Personally after looking at these submissions I find myself somewhat, left in the dark. I mean granted there was like 10,000+ submissions and 50 voted winners, most people probably did not go past the tenth page and that is tragic for those entering early... WIll the judges pour through all of them for that one last vote?

If they won't go through all entries (as stated in the official terms I think) they should at least employ a real randomized view of a certain number of entries. But I thought, that would've been the only way to view the gallery in the first place...

Either way, I can't wait for the results...for one I don't expect to win but want to print a design or two on a shirt regardless. Secondly, I am curious what the winners will be...especially the third one.

Yeah, I agree with you guys. The cat one is definitely breaking the rules ^^'' A shame though, as the creator probably wasn't aware of that rule. But I guess it just shows how important it is to read the official terms carefully xD

I don't think a cat (even if it is really cute and good drawn) could be a monster.. just my thought

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Notherguy In reply to annaluci [2012-04-02 14:05:05 +0000 UTC]

My thoughts, as well... It seems like the focus of the majority shifted away from "cute monster" towards "cute". I agree that a lot of these are cute and most are well crafted but many lack in originality since they resemble normal animals to a large extent.

Let's hope the judges award not only the more original MONSTERS of the semi-finalists but also a monster of the entire entry pool that could be identified as "cute monster" without knowing about the contest.

why is an owl voted in the CUTE MONSTERS competitions, its nice and all but irrelevant in this area of field someone else could have had a better chance

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Omnivoyance In reply to Robbu [2012-03-29 07:37:45 +0000 UTC]

The owl is rainbow colored and oozes paint like sweat. It is more monster like than another monster up there which is a cat, colored like a cat, who's monsterous abilities include clawing up fabric like a, wait for it, cat. A cat which uses up three panels so if the judges follow their own rules for the final judging it is doomed. I don't care and mean no offense to either side of this. Its what folk chose to throw their support behind and they have that right and apparently bending the two panel rule either doesn't disqualify or the judges missed it in the sorting (O.O). I just thought it was amusing that a rainbow paint spewing owl would draw the "its just an owl" complaint before a cat colored cat with cat powers would! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Notherguy In reply to Omnivoyance [2012-03-30 08:38:01 +0000 UTC]

Exactly my thoughts. I saw an rather unusual idea behind the owl I wouldn't have come up with for this challenge. Nonetheless, as said multiple times, a lot of these look like pokemon or known animals with some sort of twist. I would've preferred more original monsters, things we've never seen before but I guess people like what they know, things they're already emotionally attached to. I'm curious, which entries will win and I'd like to get some inside in the process not just the winners presented but with the considerations made.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Omnivoyance In reply to Notherguy [2012-03-30 09:23:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, any organic monster is gonna be made out of pieces of critters we have seen. The most you could hope for would be a monster based on something microscopic or the very best a monster based on inorganic structures.

Another thing that amuses me about this cat is all the folk who pretty much drew a cat (at least a thousand) with one or two changes are probably hitting themselves now that a completely unadulterated cat made it. The people have indeed spoken. They like their cats straight up and hold the horns, fangs, or whatevs! XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Notherguy In reply to Omnivoyance [2012-03-30 09:49:48 +0000 UTC]

I really like your ideas of microscopic-featured or inorganic monsters...That's something I'll keep in mind for future drawings and doodles... I mean a monster HAS to be strange and somewhat otherworldly, something one could't really define by saying anything like "It looks like a...". I think it can have recognizable features but more abstract and not head of a cat, tail of an aligator....or tail of a cat... I might sound bitter, but I really am a dog person and can't unterstand the love for cats or monster cats at all

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Omnivoyance In reply to Notherguy [2012-03-30 11:09:45 +0000 UTC]

Ah well, I know this is a Cute monster contest and all but originally monsters weren't all that lovable as a rule. So not liking cats would actually make them more monsterous to me.

Hah! The part of your comment about parts reminds me of the song from Pete's Dragon.

Pete:
He has the head of a camel,
the neck of a crocodile

Nora:
It sounds rather strange

Pete:
He's both a fish and a mammal
And I hope he'll never change
(and so on...)

Well, Cerberus the three headed guard dog from Hades was also a popular subject for shirtification and one of them actually made it through to the 50 so that is something to cheer up the dog lovers out there!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Notherguy In reply to Omnivoyance [2012-03-30 11:38:49 +0000 UTC]

Maybe all the cats and dogs and whatnot are related to the magical Esquilax [link]

You're right about monsters not being lovable and I think rather the embodyment of our fears and the effort of our imagination to personify abstract concepts...like the Grim Reaper. I think it would be more difficult to make a fear look cute than an animal.

Yeah, glad we got cats and dog, too

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Omnivoyance In reply to Notherguy [2012-03-30 19:54:49 +0000 UTC]

Well they do have a common ancestor that they share with bears, foxes, wolves and coyotes. I don't think its scientific name was Esquilax however... XD

Nah olden times monsters were rarily considered cute and if they were pretty it was either an alien perfection or a trap usually.

I like that unicorns were originally a rather ugly phallic horned beasty that over time took on the characteristics of the virgin maidens they were supposed to be baited with. The phallic horn hung in there though...

Omnivoyance In reply to DazTibbles [2012-03-29 19:59:16 +0000 UTC]

"follow to find" for sure the string goes all the way from the front panel through the side panel and to the back panel. This was a common error that people made. I have even heard folks say they knew they wouldn't win and so broke the rule on purpose to make the design they felt in their heart.

The owl one probably does as well given what the enlarged whole design looks like above the shirts but since they didnt include the side template it is hard to verify if they meant it too or not.

Any who, I had wondered if the judges would let a few of the lesser perpatrators of this one get away with it since with access to the original art it can be a pretty quick fix.

Gotcha.. I dont think that this as a big an issue as printing on more than 2 sides. Its just trickier to screen print over seams, most of the "offending" entries here are not that bigger a deal as say an all over print. DA will probably just edit the design slightly anyway.....if they win.
Your design is really cool btw and you probably did the right thing to make it not over lap as at least you fixed it your way. Good luck cant wait to hear who the winners are. Fingers crossed for the mysterious 3rd winner. Good luck

Great talents there

Seems like a lot of designs got their inspiration from the "pokemons".
I just see some similarities there cause my kidz are into that.

sadly it seems I did not have enough vote to got me in here lol.
But that's a great thing that the judges will select an additional winner out of the ENTIRE POOL... That seem more fair for folks that are new to the Deviant and the ones who don't have a lot of voters.
