Yes! My friends tease me saying I read to much (I've read over 130 through september to may) but I feel sometimes I read to little.

p.s. something scared the shit out of me the other day: I was reading an article in the newspaper and it bluntly said that minors in america put more importance on the age when they can drive than to the age where they can vote. i was just shocked.

Here! Here! I mean jesus christ, my whole flipping school looks at ready like it's a punishement. I'm in the seventh grade, i *love* austen and shakespeare. I often bring huge books to school and read all day because I've finished what's required for the classes I'm in, I get these looks that are like: "You are phsycotic."
READ YOU MORONS

I totally agree with you! I LOVE to read, and do it as much as I can (which thankfully is much more often now that I've graduated from college).
It really is quite sad that people in general don't read anymore and it's making them idiots. In my COLLEGE classes I had to dumb down my vocabulary because a lot of the time the other students didn't know what I was saying.

I was given my love of reading by my librarian aunt. She has taught me to cherish books, literature, anything that would nourrish the imagination. That includes music, watching films, writing, painting, walking... away from television and computers. BUT I love my computer and I love having access to more information although I would trade for a good conversation with a human being and a good read in the batting of an eyelid! I think one can be truly fulfilled with just the right measure of pleasure in their lives, through educating oneself, through books, through games and through life experiences, and not just from one activity only. If you want to encourage people to read more then create a book club, prepare for debate of ideas, and activities going on tangent (for example the suggestion of a book n particular could lead to the visit of the country it is set in with the book club thus enhancing the learning experience).

When someone in my 11th grade class raises their hand and has to ASK what Obsolete means, it makes me want to point at them and say, "Your brain is obsolete, because you know -nothing-. Your brain cells have fallen to disuse." I kind of want to smack them in the skull with a dictionary repeatedly and beat the intelligence into their brains. They need to broaden their vocabularies, read a book, learn something. Some tiny bit of information could do them -wonders-.

Hey genious, if you believe that survey, you're a dumbass. Numbers are incredibly easy to twist and news stations absolutely adore scaring people. And as for a good number of books to read a year being 30 or above, that is extremely roughly a book every ten days. I am sorry, but I barely have any free time. I do occasionally read during my free time, but I am sorry if I don't use every second of the precious little time I have reading. And yes, the CAHSEE is a joke, but 98% of my school passes. We aren't all illiterate dumbasses despite popular belief.

a nice point, but were those 1500 books worth it?
i read, i like reading, but im not going to read something just to add it to a list.
maybe those people didnt read that much, but maybe that the books that they did read were worth it.
what have gained from your extensive library? do you feel that now you can survive?

Surely its not about how much you read but about what you read!?!?!
i dont read a lot, i read enough... but i am not think by any stretch of the imagination. i get where you are comming from (although i am english, so dont understand the grade thingies...) i do think more people should read and play less computer games, but i also think people should be playing in the street more with their friends and being children during their childhood. and by reading as much as you have you will have limited that too... but thats just my opinion

I love books. Not everyone does - it makes me sad that 60% of people haven't even touched one though.
But it's funny that even something like reading books becomes like a consumerist competition. I read slow so I don't know if I'd be in the top 10% but I certainly love to read and write. I also don't own 1500 books...I go to a library. I just think it's ironic to have a critique on society that brags about ownership and accomplishments, even if it's about books.
That being said, I do think it's awesome that people love to read.

overheard conversation , by two girls in a linguistics direction in university ( so they chose to study english and french!):
A: Oh my, did you see the reading list?
B: I can't believe it! Three whole books!
A: Yeah, in a year's time, we have to read three books in French, how stupid!
o.O and those are the linguists. I was overjoyed with our reading list of seven books.

I couldn't tell you how many books I've read, but I remember taking in Anne McCaffrey's "The White Dragon" book into my grade four class, and my teacher asking me if I could read that. When I told her yes she made me read a passage out loud to her to prove it. -_-; I have shocking out-loud reading abilities, but she got the point.
My mum was alway reading a book after she'd done her house work, after tea, whenever she could sit down and bury her nose in it. She never shoved a book at me, or forced me to read. Rarely would she read a story to me and the others, but she always seemed so happy reading, I remember it sucked me in. I've been reading novels since I was tiny, and I was top of my reading class in Prep and grade one.
Parents don't seem to have time to sit down and read anymore, and so children don't see them doing that, and are less likely to do so... I previously had a live in job, and my boss told me reading was for school children, not 19 year old women, because I spent my whole one day off a week, reading... That made me so angry. His 11 year old daughter is a chronic workaholic.
Books are a way to escape reality, and a way to cope. And when I can't find a good book to read, I write my own stories, go through FanFiction.net, or cruise around on one of the many writing sites I've joined. I love reading.
Children these days have no imagination, and can't sit still - unless its in front of a computer or movie or gamesystem. That makes me sad.
*tassel (and some others) made some good points, though - You don't JUST have to read... Go outside and play, listen to music... Whatever floats your boat; But don't rot your childhood away in front of a screen. =S

This is one of the reasons I look up to my old primary school librarian. I think she's the reason why more kids at that school reads.
I think if I can give one person the pleasure of reading than I"d be so proud.

Thank you. They made us take a test (I was in CHS, an F graded school, cureently a D now.) and I scored a collage reading level (2nd year) in the 9th grade. Highest in my class, and most others. It made me sad. I was a C average student. We took the test again and I scored a 4th year collage reading level... >.>

We've got a million bookshelves in my house. How many books we have...not sure. Quite a bit. I've read most of them. I've got a pile waiting to be read after the one I'm on now. I go through about a book a week.
And every time someone tells me they don't like reading, it shocks me, and saddens me.
But I have to admit, gamecube/xbox/nintendo 64 are pretty awesome even though I am book inclined

Here here! It disturbs me greatly how few people read these days. Television and all other media forms seem to suck up everyone's attention and creativity... rather sad. High school seniors have trouble even reading aloud simple texts in English class...
Everyone READ! Pick up a book and find an adventure in it! You may discover things you never realized about yourself along the way.
