Our Nature
Not everyone loves or appreciates nature as much as I do. For the life of me, I do not know why. At a bare minimum nature is amazing to witness. Exploring the smallest of woods or the largest of wildernesses reveals much to the inquisitive mind and eye. On a larger scale nature holds moments of wonder as well as many answers about the future and survival. There is much to be learned from nature but, the draw goes much deeper. We, human beings, are rooted in all that is wild.
Each and every time I head into the woods I go with great hopes. I fill my wish list with thoughts of beautiful light, breathtaking scenery, a million small, enlightening details, and, of course, wildlife. Every aspect of nature is exciting but, for me, the greatest attraction is wildlife. With every step into the forest, around every bend in the trail, or at the edge of every pond my heart races with anticipation. I love to see animals in their natural element. Their story is our story. Nature is beautiful but it can also be cruel and unforgiving.
We struggle to survive. Food and shelter are necessities that we must have. These are natural conditions for all living organisms. Mother Nature tests us in a variety of harmful ways but, we harm ourselves in much more destructive ways. Yes, we are strong and resourceful. Yes, we are smart but, perhaps we are not as adaptive as we think. Intolerance, indifference, greed, and hate are the foundations of self- destruction. I am amazed that, many centuries later, we still build upon those cornerstones as if we have learned nothing.
Yes, there is still much to be learned from nature and, therefore, ourselves.
