Decided to do a quick doodle of Simba 2.0 Kopa. I've done doodles of Kion and Kiara before so it's only fair.

Don't have anything against this character. I just prefer Kion. Went ahead and give him the colours of the cub we see at the end of the original movie (gave him Nala's eye colour tho), because his comic colours aren't too great and I'm comfortable with the theory of him being a lost prince who got ditched somewhere.

I also smacked a bit of Nala's side of the family into him and have him a more 'rounded', chubby appearance. I was originally aiming to make him look rather pompous, much like the fans who still think he's canon and wish death upon Kion/Kiara because of it. lolol

Great picture.

And are Nala's eyes actually blue?

lol I dunno they’re a kinda greenish blue sometimes and blue other times so I just shrugged and went with creative interpretation

eye colours change so much in TLK (i.e. Vitani) that I just don’t bother sticking to what is “canon” in that department. It’s only eye colour, after all. ^^

What I don't uderstand, is that Kopa is basically a "fan-made" character, it's just that Disney put a stamp on him, and yet people keep arguing over him claiming he's part of the TLK (movie) universe?? Kopa is clearly a creation by Alex Simmons and not anyone from the original TLK franchise. Yet there are so many claims that he was shown in the movie (at the end of TLK) I MEAN COME ON. How did this guy become a thing, there are absolutely no evidence that he was part of the movie or the original franchise, after all he was made up AFTER the movies.
Somebody please prove me otherwise. :/

There's more evidence of him NOT being canon than being canon, yes. Disney have already turned around and said he's never going to be featured in TLK because fans were bitching that Kion was used instead of him. Using Kopa would mean having to pay Simmons a fuck ton of royalties.

The fandom sings praises to Kopa because The Lion Guard doesn't suit what they were rooting for. It doesn't matter that Kopa is a Simba 2.0, it doesn't matter that he had next to no personality in the comics and it certainly doesn't matter that he was never featured or mentioned in any of the movies. The point is that he's what the fandom is used to. The fandom were expecting a show or at least a movie that followed up Simba's Pride or at least answered their questions about Simba's Pride. What they got instead was a retcon and they're pissed as a result, as it's changed what they've preserved as canon for years. Even if one aspect of that (Kopa) was never canon in the first place.

Kion's existence also effectively seals Kopa's fate as a 'semi-canon' character in the TLK universe. Disney creating him is them saying 'Kopa isn't Simba's son in our universe. deal with it' and the fans aren't happy about it, because most of the hardcore ones have been arguing that Kopa is canon for years, even after Alex Simmons came out and said that Kopa is his creation and his alone, which I think was back in 2007.

So, yeah, hope that explains it. lol

That is EXACTLY what I imagine him to be! Fluffy colours, greenish-blue eyes, Mufasa-ish face.  I also would like to think he' the YOUNGEST, since Kion was mentioned as second-born. I don't really like the idea of Kopa being killed. I don't like animals dying. Not even lion cubs.  BUT, what if Kopa wasn't born yet in TLKII?  And the ending of the first film? That would take place some other time, not before TLKII.  I am NOT one of those crazy Kopa fans who'd favour Kopa over Kiara and Kion. Sheesh, people! But great work, anyways.

My theory is that Kopa simply left the Pridelands, as male lions do when they reach a certain age. TC-96 's fan comic explores this theory and that Kopa simply became leader of his own pride, which makes more sense than him being killed. :/

The thing with Kopa existing in the Lion King franchise is complicated because he's not canon or, at the very least, he's semi-canon. He was created by Alex Simmons, a professional writer who wrote several stories (including Kopa's) for the Six New Adventures book. He doesn't belong to Disney. I personally think that the whole reason they created Kion and did not feature Kopa in The Lion Guard is because of royalties and less restrictions on what to do with the character. If they had used Kopa, it would've required doing negotiations with Simmons (who has claimed up and down the internet that Kopa is his creation) and paying him for the use of his creation.

Personally, for a character that was only featured in a bunch of obscure comic books, I don't think the hassle would be worth it.

I'd like to say he's canon in SOME way. Just SOME way. And yes, I am following TC's theory.

Yeah, it often boil's down to people's opinions in the fandom. Some like Kopa, some like Kion. I personally like Kion because, you know, he's not that much of a Simba copy-and-paste but I'm cool with people preferring Kopa. Just as long as they aren't fanboys about it. lol

Yeah, LOL! Man, they're CRAZY about Kopa. I mean, look at this: img14.deviantart.net/3f1d/i/20… People are weird, man.

I don't remember Kopa having a personality to speak of, but hey xD

He didn't, to be honest. Most people make up their own personality for him, since he was pretty much a Simba copy-and-paste. Which is why I prefer Kion so much more. lol
