Description This was taken on 12/13/08 at 5:45 AM EST, close to the actual point in time (09:48 UT on 12/12/08) to the moon's closest approach to earth (perigee). It was closer to our planet than at any time during past 15 years.

Thank you! This was as bright as it gets, so I was VERY fortunate to (a) wake up early; (b) have a nice, clear sky. I had almost forgotten about this amazing lunar event, but our weather man mentioned it on the news. I just wish I had been able to photograph it about 12 hours earlier; however, it was daylight at that time.

Thank you, Rock. I knew about which settings to use, having done this before. It was an easy shot because the moon was so darned bright! Shutter speed was fast enough so that a hand-held shot was good enough.

Thanks! Even more amazing was how early I got up that day... not usual, even for an early riser like me. Glad I did, though!

wow! a fellow star gazer! I called my children to let them know about this, and they thought I was nuts, lol, they gave me the "so what" answer, lol, unfortunately where I am located we had pretty cloudy skies with the snow and all, so I am so grateful to get a glimpse of the moon! thanks so much , My telescope is out of commission too, so even if there had been no clouds I would only have had my binoculars...great shot

Thank you very much! Usually, I'm too lazy to stay up late at night or get up early in the morning. But this time, I had some insomnia and got up really early (around 5 AM). I happened to catch sight of the moon through the window later on, so I immediately got the camera and started snapping away! We usually have lots of clouds, too, but on this early morning, the sky was totally clear.

Thanks, Chris! This was a pretty easy shot, to be honest. I didn't even have to use the tripod, but I probably should have just for the discipline of it. It's so awkward and heavy, I don't like to use it. Maybe a monopod would be better?

desmo100 In reply to TheDauphine [2008-12-17 14:05:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. It was a lot easier to take than one would think, but it really helps to have an SLR and a 300mm lens. I had to go with manual settings on this one.

I saw it that night, but was a little late for it to be the best time to get the shot, and the next night when it was a beautiful red I was out shopping and didn't have my camera.

This is an excellent capture.

desmo100 In reply to C-Williams [2008-12-17 18:44:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Chris. You got a red moon this time of year? Wow! I would so love to see that around here. We get them in summer because of the haze and smog, but normally don't see them in winter. I used to carry my cheapie camera everywhere, but the SLR is too big and is a target for thieves. So I don't usually take it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Williams In reply to desmo100 [2008-12-17 18:51:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it's old to see it this time of year... it was just the perfect timing where it was able to reflect the light of the setting sun.

Yeah I don't lug the SLR around either, and my p&s is on the fritz, not to mention my SLR has ruined me for any other camera.

Thank you, Patricia. I haven't been able to wander too far from home (what with Jon recuperating and all), so I've been taking pix of stuff in the home and back yard.

Hi Jean, First of all I hope that Jon's (is it Jonathan...I have a son named Jonathan) surgery was a success! And during this time of the year taking pictures in my case is not something that I do very much. I tend to stay inside because I don't tolorate the cold very much. Your moon pix was great as I said...one of the best that I've seen here on DA!!!!

desmo100 In reply to PatriciaRodelaArtist [2008-12-17 18:47:49 +0000 UTC]

Jon (just plain old Jon!) is doing well recovering from his surgery, but he is very bored now. He gets tired easily, too. I'll be glad when he's back to his old self.

I'm finding I don't like the cold much, either. But if the sun is out, I'll take an exercise walk somewhere. Got to get out of the house so as not to go nuts or stir crazy. I love the outdoors, so I'll tolerate the cold. But I look like a bear after I pile on 3 or 4 layers of clothes!

desmo100 In reply to rebelx [2008-12-17 14:13:03 +0000 UTC]

I missed it by hours, but in the early dawn, it was quite visible and brilliant! I learned that it was only 99% illuminated when I took this. Still, it would not have been visible to us on 12/12/08 at 9:48 UT--it was only 4:48 PM here. So it's not a full-on view of the true "event." I can only get close. I'll bet there were lots of amateur astronomers gathered on a local mountain taking pics of it, though!
