Classic...this reminds one as in all your works of michelangelo's drawings

Beautiful. Apparently "loose", but then, loose and also precise. Lovely style

I really like the sense of depth created by the detailed knee, makes it seem like it's sticking out. Lovely gallery.

i love your mark making ability, very gestural and loose...then when you come back and tighten some areas, it leaves a much more substantial impression on the viewer...compostionally, the piece is very sound, i enjoy the diagonal you create by starting to suggest that one knee and the suggestion of the stomach...the only thing id like to see is more of that gesture-like mark making towards the top of the piece, just to give whats going on in the bottom some more substance or something to relate to...this piece is by far one of my favorites, very amazing work!

that's gorgeous. I love your approach to the soft materials - you smudge a lot but it doesn't end up with that whole hazy final transparent look that some smudging aims for. It's still bold and sketchy, but not despite the smudging, because of the smudging. I just really lik eyour approach to smudging lol, it looks fantastic.
And just evaluating it as a piece, the frame undernetah with the areas of detail overtop looks gorgeous.

Thanks for the comments. Actually i don't smudge the pastels at all. If you work pastel over pastel it gives that effect. I want my work to be direct and loose. Smudging tends to be too tedeous. Glad you like it!

hmm i c -so just working back into the pastels themselves. does that tend to make the white whiter, if you work back into it like that?

No. Actually you have to be careful. Paper can only take a certain amount of pastel before it starts getting muddy. So you have to anticipate where you want your strongest whites to be.

ah ok. so in anticipating, that means you're not working white over something that was once black - it's just pure white all the way thru?

DEREKoverfield In reply to krunce [2006-03-03 20:34:55 +0000 UTC]

well to an extent. basically all i'm saying is you can put white over black, just not too many times. eventually the paper can't handle any more pastel. so i guess the idea is to just not overwork it.
