After Apollo banished Orion, it sparked conflict between the heavenly bodies, one half siding with the sun and the other with the stars. Apollo was too stubborn and proud to admit that he'd acted rashly, and so the feud raged on. Artemis didn't want her children to grow up knowing only pain and contempt, so she took them to Earth. Gaia agreed to care for them and thus raised them as she did her own Earthbound children.

Gaia is inspired by an okapi/zebra. They seem like very "earthy" creatures to me. I didn't want to go with a planet for her cutie mark, and I had such beautiful airbrush tools, so...flowers and leaves it is.
