Description
I've been in this rough slump the last several weeks (months?), where I'm not super pleased with anything I create. Everything becomes too stiff, too flat, too contrived. To combat this I'm trying to hone my speed painting, forcing myself to work zoomed out, make confident strokes, and focus more on value and composition than detail. I'm starting with landscapes, even though I prefer people, because any time I try to speed paint a person it ends up overworked and slightly grotesque.

Anyway, this is a shot of the protagonists of Woodwalker making their way across the hills to the main setting of the book, the Silverwood Mountains, based heavily on southern Appalachia. This image is referenced from a photo of Cades Cove in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
