Description A few years ago I came up with an entirely new take on ALADDIN creating an entire history and timeline for him and his family that went way beyond anything that Disney imagined. It treated his family as something akin to Jedi knights whose destiny it was to guard the cave of magic. Only his family could enter which is why the evil magician needed Aladdin to enter and bring back the lamp. In my version it wasn't a cave but an entire underground city that was now a vast repository of all the magical objects in the world.

The actual character designs for the project were all created by Imaginary Friends Studios. I also got to work with old friend ARTHUR SUYDAM who did two great covers for the project.

Arthur came up with this piece which I really loved. It has Aladdin is the backstreets of Shamballah after he has escaped from Maughrah (the evil wizard).

Very nicely done. The colors blend in together wonderfully.

Not trying to be rude, but Disney's Aladdin was actually a take on a tale in a book, a Thousand and One Arabian nights. Aladdin and the Forty Thieves.

Yes, Aladdin is one of the 1001 Arabian Nights stories. I tied Sinbad in to my version who appeared in a different story, the Seven Voyages of Sinbad.

The story Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves was not originally part of the Arabian Nights stories but was added to some versions later by European translators.

In my version, Scheherazade, who had to tell the stories of the Arabian Nights is actually Aladdin's mother.

Yeah I agree. So I read the description you have, but I guess I'm a little ignorant. Where were you in the collaboration? did you sort of bring it all together, outline it or what's going on? I guess I have to read read it a few times seems like a well thought out group of people you know ^_^.

The project was my idea and I wrote the outline for both the comic and the original IP bible for the world it is set in. I then edited the scripts for the comic that was written by my old buddy Ian Edginton. All the character designs were by my favorite friends at Imaginary Friends Studios.

Wasn't that a comic that came out a while back?

Yes. It was a three issue series that came out from Radical two years ago. It was based on a story/reinvention of the Aladdin story I did.

Very nice! Love the realism in this piece. The clothes are more modern than in the 15th century Agrabah the Disney movie is set it. This is a weird question, but did you model him off of Tom Welling (Clark Kent in Smallville). If you didn't the resemblance is uncanny! :-P

Arthur often uses photo reference in his work, but I couldn't tell you if he used Tom for this piece.

Ok. I was just wondering. I showed it to a friend of mine and just by the thumbnail he was like "Clark Kent." If he doesn't it's a big coincidence. Well, thanks!

Just checked with Arthur and he says he didn't base it off Tom Welling.
