I believe in god, I believe in spirituality, Religion I have my reservations about.
Dont turn your back on god, dont make the mistake that religions speak for him, there is more to this than you know.
great work by the way.

The piece : Awesome! that's all i have to say.
The religion thingy... isn't all that useless. If it was completly useless who would belive in a god nowadays? Of course we can count on ourselves to sort things out, but sometimes that's not enough... in times of despair and stress who doesn't look up and starts to talk to some spirit?
In the end all is necessary: gods, demons and mankind.
Note: This is comming from a atheist who rarely belives in anything...

I am not trying to say that religion is useless. That is exactly why I talk about evolution. When society has evolved long enough, I don't think we will need it. As we hopefully have removed the reasons for most despair, alienation etc.

Well we don't agree on history itself. I do not believe a god was needed for creating beauty. and it still isn't.
Shoot.

beautiful work of art. It looks like you left some big paint strokes or smudges in the nebula (especially overlapping the planet), which look unrealistic upon close inspection. From a short distance, though, it's not really an issue. The planets are very cool. I like the civilization and the surface texturing very much. They are quite convincing.
I disagree with your argument for godlessness. Evolution is a process of chaos. It is purposeless. You cannot count on it to bring about certain results. You cannot say, "we should evolve AND become atheistic, solve problems and travel through space." Then you are trying to mix purpose with chaos, which is contradictory. You have evolved to think that you can find purpose in yourself, but this is not true; you cannot find real purpose in yourself because you are evolved and therefore your "purposes" are illusions born of chaos. To find real purpose, even nowadays, you always have to find that purpose outside of an evolutionary context. You have to find it in a god. But, if the god you find is not real, then your belief is also the product of evolution and is therefore purposeless. So my conclusion is that to find a meaningful purpose you must follow a real God.
I like this kinda subject matter (obviously... whew ) so let me know what you think of my reasoning.

Thanks for the comment.
I'm not sure which part of the nebula you are talking about, but myself I believe the top nebula, the most "cloudy" parts look a bit unfinished? Not anything big but... well.
Yes you are somewhat right. It is purposeless. In my view there i no explicit purpose with earth, mankind, or space for that matter. We have no ultimate goal.
I believe belief is a product of evolution. Its purpose is in giving people something to count upon when needed, when our society fails. It shouldn't be hard to believe when we see the statistics of world hunger, suicides, diseases etc.
Also, religions develops hand in hand with people's need for punishment. During thousands of years, crusades and extinctions have been executed in the name of one or more gods, in the name of religion. Afterall, the mass murders of nazism looks oddly small in size when we think about the many many millions christians have killed in the name of their religion. Think of witch burning, burning of villages, children, crusades agains muslims and so on. Surely it may not be the religion itself that commits these crimes, religion may be the weapon. But somebody has to use a weapon.
In the future I hope we will remove the reasons for using the weapon, the reason for killing other people. I think the key is in changing the society.

not the top nebula behind the planet, the one overlapping the bottom of the planet. Maybe it would help if the nebula cast a shadow on the planet.
Unfortunately religion is commonly misused for the contrived purposes of men. The way I see it, this is godlessness. You said that belief is a product of evolution. I think misuse, not belief, is the evolved behavoir. Look at animals to see which behaviors are purely evolved. Animals cause pain and death, but do not have belief in a god. So if you want to remove the reasons for using religion as a weapon, you should remove the evolutionary behavior, not the faith.
I haven't found proof that belief is or is not an evolved behavior... I just have faith that it isn't. That's a circular argument though, having faith in the origin of faith. So although I couldn't logically make that connection in my argument above, I assume the connection is there.

"You said that belief is a product of evolution. I think misuse, not belief, is the evolved behavoir."
Well that's where we have different point of views. I believe religions started as explanations on strange things that happened, created myths and legends. People counted on gods to help them grow crops, "control" the weather etc.
Later on, especially christianity and islam have been used in different means. They have developed according to the developing cultures, (after we got written languages, from the middle east I believe).
But anyway, I think the important part is not about where it came from, but where we are heading. Religions are products of our society and culture.
"So if you want to remove the reasons for using religion as a weapon, you should remove the evolutionary behavior, not the faith."
No, I did not say I wanted to remove religion to make things peacefull. I think religions will disappear when things get better.
But as I said, we have different point-of-views on this case...
